I got an XT wheelset for my SO's bike around a year ago, and in that year its killed 3 freehubs, so I was wondering would it unreasonable to ask for my money back?

As its getting a bit silly now, as unfortunately they seem to always go right in the middle of bloody nowhere, leaving you with a long walk back (or a bit of a ride on a fixed bike, and it seizes on). Its a shame as otherwise they are nice and light wheelset.

nb: the bike shop has been excellent with dealing with this, so I have no complaints about them, just the wheelset.

freehub seizes on, turning the bike into a fixed wheel.

quick search on MTBR/web shows its not an uncommon fault as the pawls shatter and jam.

3 freehubs in a year? I'm on the same after 6 years.

Wear and tear IMO, way too old too return anyway.

Jetwash, immersion, muc-off?

One lasted 3 weeks (in the hot and dry, didn't need washing before it went), 2nd lasted 500M, 3rd has lasted around 6 months of very light use, I don't ever use a jetwash or muc-off but they will have at some point been ridden through water on the trail.

I am wondering if they don't like the heat, as the 1st and the 3rd went when aboard and it was around 35C, and they went from OK to dead very quickly.

when I got my wolf ridge the rear mech failed and the headset sang and squeaked like I don't know what within a week.

I took it straight back to the shop on a Saturday afternoon and demanded a replacement.................and I got one.

For mountain biking the freewheel seizing on is very much a safety issue - if that happened at the wrong moment you could be in trouble. I'd be asking for my money back on the grounds of the product not being fit for purpose, and dangerous to boot.

Very unusual for Shimano.

thats what I was thinking.

it appears from MTBR I am not the only one suffering with this, and someone has done a good writeup on it

A year on with a part that is subject to wear and tear I think your chances of a claim are low - you would have to show that it is unreasonable to wear like that. Not an easy thing to prove.

Worth trying if you can be bothered

really? so you would expect to need/use 3 XT freehubs a year? (thats around £100 a year on freehubs alone)

Rich - not quite - the OP would have to prove that breaking 3 freehubs in a year was unreasonable. Its the proving it is unreasonable thats the tricky bit.

This is precisely the sort of situation that eBay was invented for. 😉
