Mine are way too long so they need trimming. How do I know how long/short they should be?

long enough so that you can fully turn the handlebars, short enough so they don't flap about?

Make em a bit longer than the gear cables, that way they wont get pulled out if your bars spin, the gear cables should stop them before the brake lines
