[Closed] How I make it easy for bike thieves

[#1459208]

Had my garage cleaned out again at the weekend, third time in a year.

My two bikes were chained to a ground anchor, but the little pirhanas stripped them both of all their parts, leaving two frames chained to the floor.

What did I do wrong? Lots of things but here's some highlights:

I left the surgical gloves I use to keep my hands clean when working on the bike. They used those to work on the bikes.

I left garden secaturs in there. They used those as cable cutters to strip the bike.

I left my trail tool in my camelbak. They used that to disassemble the bikes.

Just thought I'd mention it to make other people think, if they haven't already about the kind of things left in a garage and how they might help thieves!

Now I'm off to brick up the windows and fix the alarm!

"third time in a year"

It's the same people I'd bet...

You can get a garage alarm fairly cheap. Or landmines....

I was thinking about this the other day. Problem is that the garage is where you store tools as well as bikes

Secure door and barred windows? How did they get in?

Sorry but I am sick to death by crime (it pi$$es me right off when I read about it-chop their hands off Iran style)

If someone really wants your stuff then they'll get it. So don't beat yourself up about it.

Much smaller scale, but I used to leave a small saddlebag on my commuter with a cheap multi tool, tyre leavers etc. Until one day I came back to my bike to find one of my disc brakes missing and the saddle bag open. I now keep a muti tool in my bag on my person, and no longer run discs on the commuter,

attach a big electric fence to your bikes enough to start cooking them from inside out

Sadly, they'll probably be back again too.
What about renting secure storage somewhere ?.

electrify your bikes... or fit stickers that say 'warning - device armed when flashing light showing' then fit a little LED light somewhere 🙂

2 or 3 PIR security lights inside. Master switch somewhere in the main house.

Make sure they have more than enough light to work on the bikes.

If I were you I spend the money on a dungeon, track them down and get Fritzl on their asses for a few years.

Go to your local police station and ask for some free shed alarms. The output isn't enough to rupture eardrums but it will wake you (your giant Rhodesian Ridgeback) up.

I have two on my cheap and cheerful up-and-over garage door - they take three AAAs which last for a year or so, given the odd test activation.

EDIT: I don't actually have a giant lion killing dog; I have a fluffy white lurcher but he sounds fierce....

I think there's a large python in my garage.
Not seen it yet but its that or a possum, and there's nowhere for a possum to get in...
Meh.

If it's the third time in a year I'd be looking to stop them getting in there in the first place.

Clearly once they're in they have time to do what they like and may even have tools with them.

this type of thing is good (but quite expensive if they do get in

I don't think you should be beating yourself up about any of these things - I'm sure any clued-up bike thief would have them anyway.

That fog looks good, can you get it coloured so it looks like poison gas? I would think the same people have been into the op 3 times as they know he has good kit.Can you get any of it etched/ It would make it harder to shift on ebay.

Solid doors, 3 point locks, an alarm all of these things will help but just in case they go for attempt No 4 then a few well placed hidden cameras so you can give the rozers a face or two to look at could be worth while...

What has all this theft done to your insurance?

Since fitting THESE they've left my garage alone despite every 5th one in our street having been attacked in the last year.

A proper DIY alarm like THIS ONE is both more of a visible deterrent and more effective than a shed alarm. At £100 I reckon it's good value in comparison to the cost of repairing/replacing everything after the little scrotes have broken in.

Did they leave the gloves behind? If so, retain them for Mr Plod. Fingerprints can be obtained from the inside of surgical gloves (provided they are not the powdered type).

What ever you DO or DONT leave in the garage...If they want youre bike(s) they WIll find a way to steal it. Garages these days are Gold Mines to pikey thieves as most riders have more than one bike + bikes for wife / kids etc.
