if they are air - let th eaior out and see what travel you get

if spring then you cannot really without removing the spring

You could use a ratchet strap and tension it up via crown and bars but tbh I really would not advise that and something may well break

You can also add a ring or perhaps a cable tie to stanchion and see what you get on a ride - depends on how big a hit you take like- i very rarely get full travel from mine tbh

Zip tie round the stantion, lean over bars and bounce up and down a lot. Or ride off a cliff and land on the front wheel.

Measure the stantion and deduct approx 10 mm

measure the length of exposed stanchion then allow a bit for a section that won't get used. Not perfect but should let you know if they are 80/100/120m forks which are common for 29ers. Less relaible for telling the smaller differences like 140 and 150 forks.

The amount of stantion visible isn't always an indication of the travel.

no but it lets you know if you definitely don't have an 80mm fork for example.

I got some rebas that the seller said where 100mm. Looked a bit short and measured them and yup definitely not 100. Stripped and serviced them and found a 20mm spacer inside.
