[Closed] How come I'm XL in cycle clothing?

[#1554548]

I'm 5'8" and about 11 stone, I can't believe that's XL these days. And even XL tops dig into my underarms. And according to a manufacturers website the arm and leg warmers I need are XXL.

It was after trying on some Nike stuff in XL that wouldn't fit my arms and neck that made me wonder. Then I saw Zaskars thread.

Anyway if I'm XL then a lot of people must be made to measure?

Not sure what you are doing to be XL... I'm 5'11" and 12 stone and normally medium, often small!

dhb stuff - all medium
gore bikewear - bought a medium phantom jersey, had to send it back because it was too large; now got a small and it is quite baggy.

I'm not fat, but not mega skinny... used to loads of climbing, so fairly athletic build - 32" waist, 40" chest.

seriously, where are you buying your clothes? the children's section?

Dave

Missus just wipped out he tape, 33" waist 46" chest. Then checked my jerseys all XL and some that I bought mail order I can't wear.

I was going to say something similar to Dave. Im 5'8" and 11 1/2 stone and I often find cycle stuff a bit on the large size. Generally buy Medium but a few times I wish I'd gone for small. Anything in Large is massive.

Are you freakishly proportioned or something?

jersey sizing is all over the place. Today I tried on a troy lee xc jersey (you know, 3/4 zip and three rear pockets 'proper' jersey) and the small size was (on my trunk at least) in between roadie large and extra large. Yet the small 'neck-holes' on their dh stuff makes me prefer an xl. I believe Royal stuff is also rather generously sized even for mtb sizing.

Its your barrel chest that's doing it. I'm 5'10" with a 33" waist and a 40" chest. I wear medium kit, unless I've had a pie/ale heavy winter, in which case I go large.

Road kit is often small though and you have to watch the sizing, some of my 'medium' jerseys are a bit spray-on when I've laid off the pies.

Our club clothing is made by Gioirdana, and that comes up really small. Think it depends on the nationality of the manufacturer a lot of the time -

Italian = massive sizes, American = tiny sizes, (have you ever seen some of those fat biffer celebrites claiming to be a size 10 after about 2 weeks of dieting? In Yank clothes maybe).

Jealousy

Probably. Although not being able to go out on windy days must be a pain ๐Ÿ˜‰

Well I'm 6ft1 and overweight by a few kgs but in healthy BMI of 24.
I find the hills where it shows but I can still climb well but not fast.

My race weight is 20kg lighter that what I am now, but it was underweight for bmi but I looked fine (Sept hopefully).

I take XL endura which fits fine, but my XL DHB tops so are body tight and make look tubby lol!

My GF wants me back to L-endura sizing again! I said give me 4 months of training! (Kept all my tiht gear)

When I compare my race weight against the top dogs, I was spot on with my weight. I think BMI is overated.

Jealous? I don't want to look like a stick insect but I do like to look slim and muscular for me (and my GF a bit)

I don't look at other men as I'm not gay! (unless you include self vanity)
I think it just helps riding and also personal health.

46" is an XL in anybodies book. You must have pipecleaner arms and legs to have a 46" chest and weigh 11 stone. I'm only a 46" chest and weight 17 stone! Ok so I've got 5" round the waist on you and 7" in height. You are hooker sized but not in weight. Do you eat polystyrene?

Ir does seem cycle clothing is sized very thin. I'm reasonably heavy 100kg, is that 15 stone? but 6 foot 4. Most of XL clothing hangs of me like I've room for a friend. But my winter bib longs are XXL and tight....

I'm conical my neck is 18" but my legs go quite thin. The bit were your lycra shorts end is only 22" and I have puny 16" calfs.
BTW my missus thinks this is a bit gay.
So do you reckon 46" is XL?

Classic ex infantrymans neck.
Means I can't road climb for toffee, but can grunt up hill quick off road.

I really did wonder how on hell big guys got kit to fit.

Who would have thought people who get lots of exercise might be thinner than average? ๐Ÿ™‚

46" chest is XL or even XXL. I can imagine that at 5'8" if a cycling top will be ok on the chest it can be too long (I'm 5'10 and used to be 44-46 chest and wore XXL most tops were too long, Now I'm 42-44 chest and can fit in most XL cycling clothing without looking like I borrowed it from my older brother). A lot depends on the brand and their sizing as well.

Why?

I'm 3-4" shorter than you, and weigh a stone more. I'm a small, slim bloke. There's not much fat on me at all.

Do you feel cold all winter?

Yeah some stuff is long in the body, jackets mainly. If I want something that does up near the neck it has to be silly long, but most stuff makes it feel like I'm been strung up with fishing wire under the arms.
So XL is right then, cool.

Lusso kit usually decent sizes. I bought the Pace eVent waterproof last year, in part because Singletrack said it was "beer beely friendly".

They don't drink enough beer in that office. Bought the XXL (because I am) but that was still a bit snug. Might be selling it yet after a course of steroids lasting 2 months ๐Ÿ˜

I only suffer with cold hands and feet when cycling, but it wasn't too bad this winter.

Although I think most people feel cold in winter..

I box as well, and my coaches are always saying I'm in a very good weight category, I was at my heaviest of all time (57kg) a few weeks ago, but I've brought that back down to my usual (54.9kg). It helps me be pretty quick on the hills at least ๐Ÿ˜€

There is so much variation in the population hence the different sizing but i have to admit the fitter/slimmer you are the better the clothes look if you care that is.

I went for XL, fits my 44 chest and 34 waist but a bit like T-rex, skinny arms and legs with a beer gut.

I think Wiggo has done a great job on losing weight to improve his performance whilekeeping his endurance. I guess it depends on your goals and what you want to achieve.

I can't wait till my work contrract finishes in late May so I can work part time and ride the lard off! (just keep it off over xmas)

Cycling clothing is usually sized for malnourished Italian dwarf roadie labrats who live on performance-enhancing drugs and strong coffee alone.

Real men with chests over 44" and the tall really struggle with it - mostly.

Come to think of it I posted a while back about Sun glasses being too narrow. I don't know who my father was But I think he might have been a triangle.

RealMan (!?); are you quite young?

I'm sure you're pretty fit and healthy, and just naturally lean, but you have to admit you're unusually light!

I know it's not the best guide to health, but this suggests you're a teeny bit in the 'underweight' category.

That scale and people vary.

That scale is a huge bell curve and slightly considers build which can be small, medium and large for simplicity.

I was on the low end of large bone structure using wrist and shoulder measurements.

Someone on the low end of small with the same height will be lighter but doesn't mean better-less bone or muscle fibre type-everyone is different.

If you're talking Xc then you post a new thread on the ideal physique of a roadie or mtb bike and the muscle fibre/training type etc.

But looking at the atheletes doing well in their sport like Wiggo we have idea of where to be to win.

Where to be on a fun ride-bugger all just turn up with a beer gut :O)

What about gloves? I can only wear XL gloves (especially Fox, Raceface etc). Really big people must struggle to get kit to fit!
