How big a cassette can a Tiagra GS take as 1x

so much of the drivetrain is poorly I'm wondering about going 1x and getting a big cassette out back - the Shimano page states a large sprocket of 30t, though it has capacity for 40t - can the B screw be abused to accept an 11-36 or even 11-40?

GS on ultegra only goes to 32, but a roadlink would do the rest.
