Is it centre of bars to centre of stem, or back of bars to front of stem? I've got a road bike on loan and it needs a shorter one but not sure which length to buy.

i have a question... if stems have rise, is length measured along the stem, or 90deg to the steerer? makes quite a diff with high rise stems.

Regardless of the rise, it's c-c
You'll need to do some trig sums if you want the effective length
