Got some Shimano brakes for Christmas.Rear hose is too long.
So which is the best end to cut and any other pearls of wisdom welcome.
Lever end. Keep it as vertical as possible. Use the block. Sharp knife. Don't get distracted.
I cut at the lever end. You'll need a new insert and olive to do a proper job, if you're deft with a Stanley you can get the insert back out of the offcut but as the spare olive comes with one anyway it's a waste of effort. By cutting at the lever end you can keep it high and minimise fluid loss, then when you rebleed if there is air in the hose it'll be near the lever, hence if you bleed by using a syringe to squeeze fresh fluid in from the caliper end, there's less for the air to travel and escape (or get trapped) in
For cutting, a Stanley is fine or use a blade on its own to get a nice perpendicular cut.
Not a particularly tough job, just take your time over it.
I did the pistons out trick when shortening both my new shimano deores and both stayed very firm so I'm not about to try bleeding them!
This helped me a lot.

Piece of cake really!
Thanks STWerists. That worked a treat. No bleed needed.
