Was thinking of trying Hopton woods for the first time to do the red route, may have a look at the downhill runs as well. Is it worth a 2hr drive, and what is the surface like, all weather or muddy singletrack?

Its awesome. Some of the down sections are superb. There are some brutal climbs though. Make a day of it and do Eastridge as well, it's about 30 mins away and equally steep and Fun.
It was dry when I went but I imagine some bits would get really mucky in the wet.
Make sure you know where you are going as the map on the FC site is rubbish, very easy to get lost finding it!
I'd go again and it's a 1.5 / 2 hr drive for me.
