Integrated freehub thing? Could be.

Looks like it's a replacement top 3 sprockets for an xt cassette (which are on a carrier) instead of just adding a 40/42 t-rex and removing a 16/17 and with a wider progression up to a 40/42.
It still has a lockring so is'nt the one piece cassette/freehub.

Hope it lasts longer than the absolute black, I had one and it lasted less than 200 dry miles before the teeth were totally worn and skipping.

Before I opened the thread I thought the same as RatherbeinTobago - but I haven't seen hide nor hair of that concept in years, I'd guess that idea is dead - was a good idea -for those who missed it - it did anyway with the Freebody meaning a smaller than 11t small cog and a greater range on a 1 by set-up, but it had lots of downsides - it would only work with their hubs, it made for a very expensive cassette which is of course is maintenance part also I think they only got a 9t in which it tiny but has less of an effect than a massive big gear.

The difference between 9 teeth and 11 is more than 20%, a significant jump. It would be like going from 36 to 43 at the top end.

Wasn't that the rationale for the Canfield 9t cassette (which seems to be discontinued)?

P-Jay - Member

it made for a very expensive cassette

In the context of XX1 (and the additional cost of a freehub in a lot of cases) it doesn't seem that expensive now.

Teeth on the largest sprocket look knackered

Reading down the page on the absoluteblack offering, no good for myself with the weight limit:

Please note: rider+bike weight limit is 90kg (200lbs). This product is not suitable for shifting under huge loads as it may lead to deformation of teeth. Also, because it is CNC part it may not shift sometimes as crisp as original stamped cassette. Cnc'ed cassettes will always have a bit lower shifting performance than heavy steel, stamped cassettes.

Sacrifice shifting performance for a weight advantage..not worth the expense.

All that crap wasn't there when I bought my absolute black adaptor. I tried it on my hard tail and the shifting was awful, but saying that the chain line isn't brilliant on there due to the chain ring being in the outer chain ring position. We'll see how it gets on when I fit it to my new enduro bike with 1x specific kit. If not it'll be one of those things that looks nice but is actually useless

It's a full 10sp cassette 10-40t for a dedicated freehub body.

Not like the Absolute Black add-on. The colouring is confusing.

Maybe it's split aluminium/steel.

Probably a really nice option for wide range setups. The lack of 42t isn't as much of a problem given the 10t.

This is such an obvious gap in the market, I can imagine Hope will sell loads. Unfortunately I bet it will be a different freehub to the Sram 11sp giving us yet another standard!

It's alu on the top 3 and steel for the rest, as you said. Will require a slightly shorter freehub to accomodate the 10t. Seems a little unnecessary, and not convinced by so many alu cogs (Leonardi and Absolute Black haven't exactly set the world on fire with theirs).

Agreed about the alu warpcow - note I edited the 42t to 40t above.

Integrated freehub thing? Could be.

That was my first thought looking at it, a sort of dialling back from their original prototype fully machined 9-36t from ~2010ish...

Top three sprockets as part of an integrated freehub and the bottom end can be either HG or XD format to suit your SRAM/Shimano or 11/10 speed preferences...

[img] [/img]

Hmmm, I only count 10 sprockets...

listing says "SRAM XO drivetrain" suggesting they're still perhaps trying to find ways to squeeze smaller sprokets into 10 speed drivetrains?

Or is it something else completely different?

It was always 10 speed - but the custom freehub allows a 10t small ring instead of the normal 11t.

PinkBike saying it'll be out this year.

Hope say 10 speed in the BDS facebook vid, which is fine by me, teh industry obsession with going all spinal tap on every new standard is wearing

There'd be no point making it 11sp as it would have less range than the sram cassettes.
(Note: A few on here are running sram 11sp cassettes with XTR no problem)

Rad Cage and 42t extender still feels like the easier 10sp solution to me though.

Looks nice but I don't know why they did not go the whole hog and make the 90% of the cassette from steel and just the top 40 in alloy, it would make more sense IMHO.

Top three sprockets as part of an integrated freehub

Given that so many people will be running 1x10, and therefore spending a huge amount of time in those gears, I reckon that's a terrible idea!

I've been assuming the freehub is going to be proprietary, but it just struck me that making 10spd cassettes for XD freehubs could be interesting. The benefits of the range of XX1 (bigger steps ofc.) without the premium cost of the rest of the drivetrain.

Be nice if they offered a 11-40t on a standard 10spd hub with decent ratios.

it's not my idea, it was Hope's...

IIRC Their original concept actually integrated the bottom few sprockets, including a 9 tooth (I can imagine that being wear prone too) as part of a special ProII FH body. The bigger sprockets were pushed onto the back of the carrier before you assembled it to the hub, the obvious advantages being weight and the ability to have a 9t sprocket due to the abscence of a lockring and. it was a very neat, cool idea, a couple of years ahead of SRAM's XD driver...

it's Also worth noting Shimano's old 'Capreo' 9speed groupset which also featured a special cassette that went down to 9t (obviously not on a standard HG FH body)... again way before XD but never applied to MTBs...

Agreed

Got to only be a matter of time before Shimano does this themselves and brings out Deore/SLX level 11-40T 10spd cassette no?

11-13-15-17-20-23-26-30-34-40 would be absolutely spot on please!!!

Will require a slightly shorter freehub to accomodate the 10t.

It doesn't, because it is the freehub.

But you spend less time in those gears than with 2x9 or 2x10 gearing - or at least that is what I've found since putting 1x10 on my FS vx 2x9 on my HT.

This, for the love of god this!

Enough people seem to want it and it cant be that expensive for Shimano to make...why havent they done it yet?!

I think its coz the mechs aren't quite perfect with a 40t out back, though mine ran pretty well with a zee fr, so people will put up with a bit less sliixkness

As kimbers says the mech are not perfect with it so would need a tweak, (SRAM seem to work better out the box) also why would they hamper the sale of their 11sp groupset by introducing basically the same thing in 10sp? Marketing suicide, the future is 11sp got it?

For the same reason they never offered an 11-36 9 speed cassette, or 9 speed clutch mechs, why sell a slightly bigger cassette for extant groups @~£50, when you can flog a whole new drivetrain with one extra cog and a posh non-backwards compatible mech for ~£500 or whatever...

It's not a new, or particularly nasty idea, it's just shimano only started down the forced compatibility route a bit later than the rest of the planet...

Moar thingz is betterer! FACT!
