Ok, come to fit a new cassette, other one is jammed on, used degreaser, left for half an hour, attempted again, this time... Cassette flies off with the Gold spinny part still in side and a grey metal UFO looking part drops onto the floor.

Now... How do I put this back together? On the underside of the Gold part there are 4 hinged parts that I can tell are meant to slot in to the open bit of my hub (That is still attached to the spokes etc) due to the shape, bu they have to be held in to do so and they flick back out when close.

Please help me in my time of need, I've never attempted to take hubs apart :/

Thanks!

The special circular tool at 5:27 that he uses to finally press the freehub onto the hub, is that needed or is there a bodge version?

No just hold a little weight against the freehub and use something blunt to pop the seal into the lip working your way around if you catch me drift

You can do it carefully with a screwdriver working your way around - I take it thats for the seal?

By the sounds of it you might have wear on your free hub body caused by the cassette. If that is the case I would just order a new one to go with your new cassette. I think it's the pawls you are struggling with too. The video is a good help btw.
edit, or dress it up with a file if you get it apart.

I've managed to get the cassette off now, I'm heading to the local bike shop soon so if they have that Hope Metal Press piece thingy majig I'll just pick one up there, if it's over a few quid they can jog on and i'll take up the blunt object option. I wasn't aware it was there purely for the seal to seat.

Again, always much appreciated for all the help. This section of the forum is what makes STW I find.

Tom
