half way round dalby to night and my pro 2 rear hub stopped engaging. It was a long walk back. How do I fix it.
New pawl springs.
unless totally knacke,.usual remedy is to give the cassete a few gentle biffs with a rock/hammer etc this makes the pawls spring back. its either worn or full of gunge causing them to stick open....
Tried the rock, banging the rear end down and wipping the pedal round, some times worked. Is it a big job.
Is it a big job.
No, I'm mechanically inept and even I can fix them (in fact I did one three evenings ago). It is, however, a bit messy and time-consuming if the little springs fly off all by themselves... ๐
what will i need. I have the bearing tool from changing the front hub bearings. what parts will i need.
Instructions should be on the hope site. Its an easy no tool job to strip the freehub - probably you just need the springs. It can even be done trailside and its possible sometimes to get it going again ( but not always)
Once its stripped out and cleaned then you should be able to tell if the pawls are knackered as well - easy replacement or ( unlucky and rare) the ratchet ring is damaged which needs to go back to hope to be fixed.
If it's a Pro11 then it's almost certainly the pawl springs(it's highly likely to be full of crap too if it's been used a lot.), don't worry about them flying out, as they (and the pawls)are held captive in the freehub.Spring breakage was common on the early models, we now change them as a matter of course during a hub service(something only occasionally needed on the older coil sprung models).A useful tip is to remember is not to fit the spring where the pawl goes, and vice versa.
Can I interject with a link ๐

as said already if its springs / pawls very easy job
It's easy to service the hub, but getting the freehub off the body is a right PITA if you've not done it for a while. I used the stack of pennys sitting on the axle and a cassette lock ring to get it off.
Had this happen on a ride, yo can use zip ties to lock the cassette to the spokes to get you home ๐
Mine did the same after a trip away. It was the springs. All 4 had snapped. New springs cost nowt and as above - easy to replace. I told Hope in case they there was a problem with quality or something but they seemed to think it was rare. Younggeoff's bodge sounds like a good idea.
almost certainly pawls and spring replacement. The nice thing about the way that Pro 11 fit together is that with a bit of force you can get your fingers behind the cassette and pull the whole freehub body off with it still attached. Watch for the end cap going flying into the grass though!
not the nicest way to do things but if its that or walking its worth a try. Assuming its all stuck down with gack a bit of handy stick should clean it up enough to get some engagement.
The 'wrenching the whole freehub off by the cassette' method also useful for if your chain disappears down between the spokes and the cassette.
Hope are sending me the pawl springs for nothing, not bad. Just have to try and get my cassette off now
Roughneck - the end cap that the chap is taking off with mole grps in the pic - if you get two screwdrivers you can lever it off
Pulled the body and the cassette off in one. Will I get it back on with out taking the cassette off?
you might get the cassette and freehub back on in one piece, but probably won't. The springs need to be compressed as the freehub is pushed into place, the cassette tends to get in the way as you compress the springs.
It isn't that hard to get the cassette off, assuming it hasn't dug into the aluminium..
Two tyre levers are even better for getting the end cap off, managed to gouge mine the first time using screwdrivers.
If you rotate the freehub as you push it in, the pawls/springs will compress and it'll slot in, but you'll probably have trouble seating the seal in the hub body with the cassette still attached.
Give it a try. I have sucessfully done so
Done it but it's a bit stiff, I think a full strip down is in order
If it's stiff, check the seal is seated in the hub properly.
Lock ring and first 2 rings off and the rest of the cassette is stiff any tips?
Rest the freehub on something with a hole for the axle to fit into, and tap the cassette from behind with a drift of some sort, it's usually small burrs on the freehub body holding it on.
