Hello everyone,
Hope SS Evo hub ****ef,pulled freehub off to find 2 broken springs and shed load of the winters finest. Pawls look ok mind.
So,
1, whats best to clean everything without damaging bearings within hub.
2, Once cleaned and new springs fitted, whats best, dry, grease (what grease) oil or what.
Not done this before so little un-nerving !.
Thanks everyone.
Chris
ps, springs from stif bikes £2.96 which seemed a good 'posted' price for anyone in the same boat
just give it all a good wipe with a rag and put the rag on the end of a scredriver for the fiddly bits.
I tend to just use whatever grease I use on the rest of the bike, tbh. not too much or the pawls can get a bit sticky and not spring back quickly enough. It'll take a couple of rides to get the Hope Buzz back afterwards, though.
Phone Hope, the springs shouldn't have gone in a fairly new hub and they'll send new ones.
When mine went after only 6 months, they popped 6 replacements in the post same day.
I've tried using Fox Float fluid (thick gear oil) and a thin smear of grease. I found I prefer the grease as the oil picked up dirt quite quickly and also made the hub too quiet.
Are you sure your bearings are OK, if its apart it may be a good time to change any on the way out.
1- toothbrush.
2- grease where metal meets metal- round bits & ends of springs & pawls & a bit on the teeth but not much.
