Can anyone confirm that this is the kit I need to convert my Hope Pro 2 (non-evo) rear from standard 135 QR to 142x12?

The new frame is a Transition double if that makes any difference.

Asked in my LBS and they asked the local (NZ) Hope dealer who claimed no such kit exists and I would need Pro 2 evo freehub and bearings at a cost of over NZ$200.

Cheers

The axle is not 12mm in the Original ProII so you need to swap out the axle, bearings and freehub body (I think) this effectively gives you the ProII Evo Hub which then has some other endcaps on it.

These may help but for cast iron definitive answers pose the question to service@hopetech.com for the right answer, part numbers and everything.

Pro II Evo works with both sizes just different end caps. You cant change some hubs over, however Hope seen to have worked this out quite easily.
The hub shells are the same except for the "Pro II" laser etching disappearing and being replaced on the opposite side of the hub from the Hope logo by a new, larger "Pro2 evo" design.

There are 2 functional upgrades, probably the most important is the switch on the rear hubs from 15mm to 17mm inner diameter bearings. This allows a much thicker axle to be used, hopefully eliminating the regular failures of 12mm through-axles on the standard Pro 2. The 12mm axle wall thickness has increased from 1.5mm to 2.5mm.

From http://www.justridingalong.com/news/2011/03/hope-pro-2-evo-whats-new/
The hub body is the same but you are just swapping the all the moving bits. But as above drop Hope an e-mail and get the definite response.

You CAN convert a pre EVO Hope hub to 142x12, you need the 12mm axle tube and two end caps, RRP £22 for the kit.

It's the Pro2 X12 conversion kit that you need for 142mm, not the Pro2 12mm thru conversion kit which is for 135mm.

On the hope website it is labelled as HUB231 which if you quote to your hope importer they may backtrack on "it doesnt exist" and find it for you.

I just got mine from here Also here and CRC

Edit: it is just a normal 135x12 with longer spacers on it. So if you are already 135x12 then just pop the caps on, if you are qr or 10mm you will need to pop the new axle in.

IIRC at least one reason for Pro2 EVO is the inherent weakness of the 12mm axle on original Pro2. The smaller bearings in the original mean the axle has to be made too thin.

Not personal experience, just what I have read.

mikewsmith got it right first post. What you need is the ProII EVO bearing kit and the ProII EVO axle, as the hub shells for the ProII non-EVO and EVO are the "same" (just different laser etching)... as the freehub side of the axle is 15mm on the non-EVO and 17mm on the EVO version. Then just pick whatever end-caps you want to use.

Simples!

Addendum: And don't forget the new (bearing) spacers too. Should be able to figure out all the part numbers you need from the PDFs. Or order from a Hope Techshop. CRC will probably have to do most of is via special order... and I've never tried them for that. 😉

I've got the pro2 hubs running 142x12. I got mine from ukbikestore, the X12 kit. The axle wall thickness is waferlike I'll admit.

That said I happily crash around the Peaks and 3' drops to flat and haven't bent it yet 🙂

That said the upgrade to evo bearings and axle is new to me and sounds like a good plan when the bearings die - cheers 🙂

Unfortunately the axles do fail due to them being thin on the PRO 2, as oldnick says. It happened to me BTW. When it did fail I contacted hope and they sent me out a new steel axle. It's been fitted but not ridden yet, but from what I've heard the steel axle solves the problem.

I've read on the justridingalong website that you need a new freehub to convert a non-evo Pro 2 hub to evo specification. Can someone please confirm if this is true and if yes, why?

I understand why the new bearings, axle and spacer are required, but why a new freehub? It's a fairly costly procedure when you add the £50 of a new freehub on top.

Because the bearings have changed in that too requiring a new freehub body to accommodate them.

Oh I thought it was just the inner diameter that had increased, poo.

The free hub bearings were quite a small ball already so I suspect they had to fit a bearing with a larger outside diameter into the free hub so the balls didn't become invisible.

OMG how to totally confuse someone!!
Right to summarise you have two options;-

1) Get HUB231 kit to convert your existing Pro 2 hub, this is the one required- http://www.biketart.com/25884/products/hope-pro-2-old-142mm-conversion-kit.aspx As mentioned above there have been problems with this axle due to thin wall thickness.

2) Convert your Pro 2 hub to Pro 2 Evo Spec with stronger axle, in which case you will need Axle HUB229, Spacer HUB436, Freehub HUB520 and end Spacers HUB462 & HUB463 & obviously costs a lot more.

I find these Doc usefull to compare the two hubs;-

fit HUB231. Snapped axles caused mostly by using the Maxle Lite.

So, in my case, I have a Hope Pro 2 EVO Bolt-In hub, to be converted in a 142x12 mm, I should change the axle (because the 10mm bolt-In) and then, wich spacers? 12 mm Thro Bolt? or X12 Thro? http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=68578

P.D.- As long as I understood the body of a Hope Pro2 EVO is the same for 135 than 142 mm hub space frames?

Well no. Snapped axles caused by the axle being 2 bawhairs thick. Solid axles can help with that but both my snapped pro 2 axles were running on solid axles (and 2 different bikes, in case you're wondering). Very happy to be shot of that, luckily they never snapped at too inconvenient a time.

zepequeno you need No 9. - HUB229 and Nos 28 & 29 HUB462 & 463 (which is the X12 Thro kit on the link you posted)

The Hopetech drawings are VERY useful;-
