[#3167679]

Got some pro 2 evo hubs. They've been great on a FS bike. Recently moved them to a stiff alu hardtail where through the twisty rooty bits I'm out the saddle a lot and need to be a lot more bursty with the pedalling. Pretty much every time it feels like pedal... clunk then acceleration. It's starting to get a little annoying. Is it just me or are the Pro 2's quite slow to engage? How do other rear hubs compare?

just you. some hubs do engage quicker but pro2s are pretty comparable with the majority.

I wonder if the pawl springs are broken. Never noticed mine being slow for sure

As above. Serviced mine recently and found a broken spring. Just got some replacements; very easy fix.

Hmm might take it appart and have a look. Didn't notice it at all on my xc fs bike, might put them back on and see how they feel.

Its noticable going from my ss with a hope ss hub (48 point engagement) to the cx with a pro 3 (24 point) but nothing to get my knickers in a twist over.

Wonder why more engagement points on the SS hub?

They just offset 2 of the pawls...which is odd as you'd expect more torque on the ss.You do end up doing a lot of 'ratcheting' riding ss though.I've ridden i9's (172 Point?) and its instantaneous, but a bit weird tbh.

Ah now that makes sense. Shall check out the i9. I was half looking at the Chris king which looked like it had a lot more engagement points, too much cash for me though.

Actually you'll get less torque through the hub on a SS. Think about it a mo, you've only got a small cog on the back, so you can't put as much torque through the hub as if you had a big +32 tooth cog - a longer lever if you like. In fact, for a given squeeze at the pedals, the hub will get half the torque through a 16 tooth than it would through a 32. So you only need 1/2 as many pawls for same strength. Offset the 'spares', freehub engagement WIN.

Mmm liking those profile hubs a lot. The superstars one is tempting though seems to get not so great reviews.

Sounds like broken pawl springs to me too. My Pro2 started doing this - not feeling like it was engaging so quickly - opened it up and 3 of the 4 springs had broken so only 1 pawl was working.

Phoned Hope and they posted replacements next day.

My Pro2 is making that "clunk" noise too! Still got a satisfying tick tick tick tho. Is removing the freehub as easy as the hope video shows? just pull and twist?

The trickiest bit is removing the drive side spacer. You'll need to clamp it in a vice or use molegrips and wiggle it off.

Once the spacer is off, a positive pull and twist will have the freehub straight off.

Blimey, 3 out of 4 broken? How much abuse had it taken? This is a relatively new hub. Shall pop the free hub off an have a look.

Crikey!

My XC's been neglected for almost 2 years, bearings were just about gritty and freehub was full of mud, but it still worked!

Why did they change the spring design away from the biro springs in the XC?

It had about 8 months use when the springs broke. Regular use but not the hardest of lives.

My guess for changing them would be that in my experiance when you open up an XC hub the Pawls and springs go flying, presumably trying to find the nearest fridge to hide under where as the revised design on the Pro 2 they changed the design of the spring to help prevent this.

Just had a look and one of the leaf springs definitely seems to be lacking in spring. The other three seem fine. Tried it in a different hole and it still lacked spring so don't think it's a problem with the freehub body. Only had this hub a few months, it's done MM but other than that it's been light duties. Shall get the spring changed and see if it makes a difference.

Do wonder why they changed too as my old Hope XC has survived years of abuse with very little service at all!

Phone Hope and explain a spring has gone. They'll send a replacement set of 4 springs. It's best to change them all together.

wasn't moaning, just deliberating over a new hub as I'm about to build a new wheelset and there's a temptation to buy a pro2 hub rather than use my existing XC rear/bulb front combo.

But then again I get about 2 years from a wheel build and my newest frame is still 135QR so no hurry to upgrade.
