A little forum wisdom wouldn't go amiss here....

Just replacing pads on old hope mono minis and one piston is a little sticky. What's the best lube to put round the piston if I get it almost all the way out?

Cheers folks

Best - IMO red rubber grease. Brake fluid will do.

Some oils can make the seals swell and stick more.

Red rubber grease. Brilliant stuff, plus it's £5 for a tub from Frosts and it will never run out in your lifetime

Crikey, feeling a bit ignorant here. What is Frosts? I googled it to no avail. Is it a shop of some kind, and is red rubber grease an actual product name?

Oh yeah and thanks for the help

Use brake fluid or silicone gun lubricant. Grease will infect the oil and give you a spongey feeling at the lever much quicker

Is it sticky or seized?
hope the brake fluid works but you might have to change the seals if not.
If you've got better things to do with your time hope do it for 35£ ish. Includes work, new seals, phenolic pistons, set of pads.
Sometimes wonder why i bother doing it myself, ah that's it, i like it.

This is the correct / best stuff but brake fluid will do Other manufacturers make it as well. It will not attack the seals or the brake fluid in any way

The piston is probably corroded. Pushing it back in will just force the corroded part past the seal, possibly damaging it.
Ideally, you should remove the piston and polish the outer surface.
Or fit phenolic pistons so it won't happen a gain.

If I was stripping it down, I'd use the earlier mentioned red rubber grease or silicone grease.
If I was just doing it in situ, I'd use brake fluid as it will easier get all around the piston etc.
Hope pistons suffer with crap build up rather than corrosion most of the time so a re-build is a bit of an over-kill every time it sticks
I tend to push them out [as far as I dare] one at a time, holding the other(s)back & applying brake fluid with a cotton bud or similar, push it back in & repeat a couple of times
do the same with the other piston(s)

Give it all a good clean with IPA or meths & stick the pads back in

Quicker to do than type up

Awesome responses thanks for all the help. Not corroded as far as I can see so just going for a quick clean, lube and new pads

Cheers
