[Closed] Hope Hoops with stans rim cracked

[#5343589]

I've had a set of hope hoops for a year or so and noticed a loose spoke the other day. Turns out the rim has cracked either side of a spoke hole almost down to the edge of the sidewall.

Is this a warranty thing? There's no dents near the crac,k that could have weakened the rim.

Are Hope the best people to ask about this, or would it be stans as it's the rim that's gone?

The people you bought them from are your point of contact. Rim is Stans part so check their site for their details though. Over a year it's probably wear & tear

Hmmm, have to try and remember where I got them! is it 'reasonable' wear and tear for the rim to just split with no obvious damage causing it? never had a rim go like this before

depends what you did with them, it can take one hit to crack a rim without knowing it really.

I have seen rims bend and split from some some simple crashes.

Which Stans rim is it, some are not that strong.

its a flow that's been used on the rear of an enduro / cove g spot for all round riding in the peak district with one or two trips to cwmcarn / glentress etc. no jumping or anything 'big'

I'm sure I read that Stans rims are designed for a fairly low spoke tension...which means that the spokes cannot be tensioned enough to get them to their 'elastic' stage, or something like that.

Which basically means a lot of Stans rims are apparently over tensioned, and if correctly built the spokes under tensioned!

Any wheel builder able to confirm?

Stans recommended tensions are mostly higher than Mavic's- 100kgf for a Flow, 125 for an Ex, compared to 90 (from Mavictech) But I think some wheelbuilders are afraid to build them tight.

cracked both the Stan's Flows on my pump track / play bike after about a year.

lots of small cracks around the spoke drillings. Built them myself and kept the spoke tension within the recommended limits (using Park spoke tension meter).

have not touched Stans rims since, found eyeletted rims (currently using Roval) a better bet, can put a higher tension into them making for a stronger and more zippy feeling wheel

Your contract is with the shop you got the wheels from
Not hope or stans , but hope are better than most at sortin out issues direct with end customers

I'd just drop them a mail and see what they might be able to do for you

Ironically, I've cracked more eyeletted mavics than uneyeletted stans- the Mavics cracked around the eyelets ๐Ÿ˜‰
