[#4417779]

I have just bought a hed doctor and it is about 2-3 mm to big for my steerer. Does anybody know if I can remove the outer sleeve from the hed doctor or know of any other brands which make thinner plugs. My fork is a on one carbon monoqocue. I didn't even give it a thought when I bought it I thought all 1 1/8 steerer would be a standard internal diameter as well. Cheers I hope someone knows how to get round this!!!

Stronglight do a nice one(Through Bob Elliot), or M:Part (Madison). A quick pop along to your LBS should be able to source one for you. The Hope ones are for Alu steerers which have a larger internal diameter, the ones above are for carbon sterrers, so are narrower and knurled.

You've worked out that you can reduce the diameter by unwinding the bolt, right?
If so, I found that even after that the rubber O-ring was too large for the steerer on my Revs, and the process of inserting the Hed Doctor resulted in said O-ring getting pretty much shaved in half.

Not sure that'll entirely help, but hopefully...

nickop74 +1 The rubber ring was destroyed in the process of inserting it, but it finally went in with the wedge relaxed, and holds. The last time I fitted a SFN in a Rev/Sektor fork it was also a pain.

Yep, I found the hope head dr too large for my carbon steerer. I went for a kcnc which worked a treat.

As above even with the bolt unscrewed & O-ring removed it can be a tight fit.

Technically you don't even need it - simply assemble the stem on the steerer and push down on the forks, then tighten the stem.

You can use the spangly Hope top cap by putting bit of hosepipe over the bolt and securing it with a nut & washer. Push it into the steerer tube and tighten it up so the piece of hosepipe expands and wedges itself in place.

I got an ITM expanding bung from EBay was a little smaller and fitted snugly.

I found using a pipe cutter on my steerer left a small ridge inside the tube, so I filed it a little (from the middle, filing towards the outside edge) to remove 1 or 2mm. It then went in okay.

I had exactly the same problem with my Revs, reassuring to know it wasn't just me being ham-fisted. In the end I gave up and just used a star-fangled nut, I appreciate this doesn't help the OP though.

if you happen to have a diamond wheel tile cutter then that...but if not then a new fine pitch blade and can use a bit of water to keep the dust from getting everywhere if doing it indoors.

If you want to buy a specific blade then I would suggest a tungsten carbide one eg http://www.carbonmods.co.uk/products/perma-grit-305mm-hacksaw-blade__hs12.aspx . I've used a tungsten carbide rod saw on a junior hacksaw to cut through some tricky curved wing sections before which was very easy and cut well. Remember to use a steel bolt to adjust/get the preload right. Then replace with the aluminium bolt supplied that's made of cheesy plastic.

The blingy KCNC is too fat for the On-One monocoque as well. 🙁

The £3.99 FSA one I bought from CRC fitted a treat. Typical.
