I know very little about these, think I might have read that Hope changed the design or the bearings of these in the last year or two?
If so how can you tell if a 2nd hand headset is the newer or older type and if the older type can you still get replacement bearings and parts for them?

If Hope did change them. The Bearings will still be available they have a great reputation for after sales service. Iot that i have ever used it, but I have a lot of their stuff on my ride.
The headset I have got is still silky smooth after a few years riding. Only re-gressed the bearing once when i had the fork out.
I use these in mine and they seam to work fine. And half the price 🙂

You can't buy bearings for the old style headsets
