Hi, I have just installed a hope headset and the top race came with 3 washers. Now when I've installed headsets in the past they have only come with one washer so should i be using all 3 or does it depend on how close i want the top cover to sit?
Pretty much as you've guessed, less washers create more preload on the seal. It's in the installation instructions if you have them.
It didn't come with the installation instructions but ill take another look at the Hope website to see if they are there.
Depending on the tolerances of the steerer diameter, the conical compression ring sits at a slightly different height relative to the top cup on every fork. The washers or shims allow you fine-tune the height of the top dust cover so that it sits as close as it can to the cup without dragging on it

Thanks for that further clarification Rocketman, currently i have it so its not touching but as close as i can get it so it sounds like its right but i will double check it to see if i can get it any closer.
