[#4943549]

Hi Guys,

Just hoping for a bit of advice to limit my chances of making the wrong repair choice.

I have a pair of DH wheels and the rear is making a high pitched whizzing noise when I freewheel. Not like the normal Hope clikety-clack tractor noise at all. It works just fine, good pick-up, spins freely and the rear wheel spins freely with no play. I had assumed the bearings in the Freehub were goosed but given the above am starting to wonder if it's something else. Any ideas? They must be at least 6 years old so I'm guessing they are Pro or Pro 2 ( it just says Hope on them and a very tiny 6-figure code underneath).

Many thanks in advance.

Good news. What would I be looking for though? I have a brain the size of a planet but limited mechanical experience.

Check all the pawls are free, the springs are not snapped and there's lube in there. The bearings should be smooth to turn. Nothing else to go wrong with them!!

Hope's vid:

Little planet?

Just google and check the bits are in and working - needs no mechanical experience.

As said above - Pawls or Pawl Springs, or worn ratchet that the pawls engage with, but if they are working fine, take em apart, grease em up and keep running them

Make sure you have a look soon. If there are bits of broken springs in there it could cause damage. I wrecked a bulb hub that way

I love the design inventivness of my hope hub, everytime i take the cassette off i have to check the paws because the cassette is jammed onto the free wheel and come out of the hub still attached to the cassette.
Bit of a file, some grease and soft mallet it all goes back together to be forgotton about till next time.

sounds like the pawls and springs are parched.. did mine yesterday and it wasnt sounding it's usual self. the pawls and springs were goosed. swapped them out with the revised smaller ones and now we're clicking like mad again 🙂

I think dirk_pumpa has it. Just back from the Man Cave after taking the Freehub apart. It was indeed pretty easy - the neighbours 7yr old daughter helped me do it!

The bearings are running fine but one of the springs is a little wonky. No idea what the pawls are supposed to look like but they weren't obviously damaged. Cleaned everything, regressed the ratchet and put it back together. Still making the high pitched whiny sound and now with grease in it the ratchet is barely making a whisper. Time for new paws and springs I guess.

I presume if the ratchet is worn then it means a new hub body?

If it's fairly old, it may be a Bulb, at which point it has a much finer ratchet ring on the freehub, so will buzz more than clatter.
