Looking at servicing the free hub on my pro 2 evo rear wheel as its gone quite noisy!
How hard is it to do and does anyone have any hints or tips for doing it!
What grease is best to use?
Cheers
Steve
It's when it's quiet you need to worry......

It's pretty easy if you are that way inclined.
I use Silkolene waterproof grease thinned down with a bit of engine oil. Using thick grease makes them quieter but risks the pawls not engaging.
Knock out the bearings and degrease them. If they are worn stick new ones in filled with waterproof grease.
As you take it apart lay the bits out on the bench on some white paper in the order they came out to make re-building a simple reverse process
I had to pay for mine .
When its quiet start worrying. I run mine with just a little lube in there, use to pack it with grease but it just attracted shite
Should I not bother then?
The wheel has only done about 400 miles since new.
The free hub is LOUD!! That's all.
Bearings nice and smooth.
you mean it's in new condition!
If the noise of the freehub bothers you then you have bought the wrong wheel because they are all like that . Everything that has been said is correct , it's when they go quieter that they need servicing and a very light grease is used because anything thick will hinder the action of the pawls in the freehub . Definitely leave it alone .
Quieting down the freehub is easy, as mentioned above, you only have to pull the pulling the freehub off (no need to disassemble it further) & add grease into the pawls & pop it back together. It isn't a hard job & though can be annoying to get the end cap and them freehub off the hub, but the more you do it the less likely to be a pain the arse it is long term.
Otherwise embrace musical joy that a hope hub brings to a ride!
It doesn't bother me as such it means I have to pedal more as my riding buddies can here when I freewheel!;)
This hub is a lot louder than my previous hope hubs?
Yes it is, I have a XC and Bulb wheelsets, both are disturbingly quiet after I use my ProII long term - it's very weird.
The trick for freewheeling is to just keep spinning your legs without pushing/powering the wheel (I have the same kind of friends!)
Wouldn't worry, should a few 1000 miles left before a service. Popping the freehub off and giving it a little clean is worth doing often imo
They vary probably dependent on how much and how thick the grease is as well as where in the hub it is.
If one of the seals isn't put back properly they drag like hell.

Sounds like a good idea, will give it a go when I get around to doing mine.

and there is nothing more satisfying than sitting behind someone pedalling hard with your freehub buzzing away ๐
New evo's are a lot quieter!
40 tooth ratchet - more buzzy than clicky
I found changing the bearings on my hope xc a bit of a ball ache (shop next time for that). Freehub clean up dead easy.
Mines a pro2 evo?
How does the free hub come off to give it a clean up then?
Edit - just watched the video above!! Do I really need the special tool to seat the freehub seal properly?
Think you just pull it off?
What grease do people use for this? I did mine recently, but used finish line teflon grease and I think it's a little bit too thick as the freehub is now very quiet and I'm concerned it may do something bad to the pawls or springs.
Twist and pull just as the video above.
Fox float fluid works well I find, much quieter and cleaner than grease
