[#6702695]

Having spent most of my riding life spinning some Shimano or other, recently installed some Hope XC (Xtra-Clackety?) hubs. I'd heard that they were reassuringly noisy so was somewhat prepared but it's proven to be a big leap for me as so accustomed to zooming silently through the woods and enjoying the sounds of nature :-/

Anyone else been bothered by this, does it 'go away', or is there some upside to it that I can convince self of?

You get used to it.
The noise helps walkers hear you coming.
The new Evo hubs have a more subtle buzz to them.

you don't notice it so much one the wind noise picks up as you accelerate. I have the newer 40t ones too and they are pretty infuriatingly louder than the older ones, it does sometimes annoy me. I do like a quiet freewheel too.

Hope XCs? The older ones you can't get any more?
They're the quiet ones. They have a nice tick but they don't make a noise like a skeleton having a wnak in a biscuit tin like Pro 2s and the the later hubs
I've got 2 of them and the noise is quite nice.

The level of noise is very much affected by frame material and tube shapes. I noticed a significant increase going from a steel El Mariachi to my Ti Burls.

I hated them to begin with, now I quite enjoy freewheeling making lots of noise as the person in front is pedalling, reassuringly smug

Hoof some thick grease in them....quietens them down (for a bit).

Yep, much like the other 90% of my bikes and eqpt ๐Ÿ˜‰

Ah, the gigantic CAAD3 tubes on my Cannondale are stonkingly efficient passive amplifiers

Errr... Slight thread hijack

Why has my XC hub developed a whirring sound that's loud enough to drown out the clicky clicky? Is it gonna be carnage when I open it up?

Aaaand.... I don't suppose anyone has got a spare pro2evo freehub body kicking around in their spares box.. Mine's cracked ๐Ÿ™

One of my pro2 freehub bodies cracked recently.

If you have a choice, take the opportunity for s steel replacement. They cost the same and are stronger...

Probably wants a clean & lube.

OK. Hope XCs shouldn't be loud. Sounds like they need a clean out and a bit of fresh grease.
DO NOT pack them full of grease. This stops the pawls engaging properly and ruins them.

Too much grease stops engagement of the pawls and doesn't really 'ruin' them. Just a little smear is all that's needed.
I fixed the issues of my Pro2's by getting rid of the hateful things and fitting other hubs........
Still have my XC hubs which were proper made hubs and spin lovely and have the added bonus of a proper seal on the freehub to stop crap getting in !!

My Hope Bulb has quite a nice buzz about it. When riding with my mate who has a pro 2, I sometimes get jealous of his noise but then think it might just be a bit too loud. Which does have it's uses when it comes to getting walkers to notice you though.

Weirdly, my rear Pro 2 makes a lot of noise, but the front one is virtually silent.

You can fix that by adding playing cards to your fork legs.

At least any dog walkers you encounter will know your coming. You can take the bell of your bars now... ๐Ÿ˜€

It's their way of telling you that you're being lazy!

Keep pedalling!

+1 on the keep pedalling, won't do me any harm and cheaper than replacing wheels yet again!
