Whats the difference between these modern 'floating' rotors and the old 5 bolt affair, that first mounted to an alloy spider, then to the hub fixed with a lockring.
Isnt the floating rotor just that,a steel rotor attached to an alloy carrier attached to the hub.
Same but more expensive or is there more to it than that.
Discuss please 😕

The floaty ones are not "attached" to the spider as such. The rotor pushes against the outside of a thing that's a bit like like a big chainring bolt. The inside of this pushes against the spider. When heat expansion sets in then the rotor is free to shift side to side.

As above, the old 5 bold was just that, bolted to an alloy spider. The new ones "float" on bobbins. There's not a lot (if any) sideways movement but they can expand out if they need to.

I really like the old 5 bolt system. I thought it was much prettier than the 6 bolt style rotors. I've still got 4 wheels worth of BULB hubs running this system. The good news is, if I do decide to upgrade to the new Tech brakes, Hope will still make a 5 bold rotor for them

As far as im aware they charge through the nose for custom cut rotors 😕
Hang on to what you have with both hands.
Im fortunate enough to have a bulb front that has the same spider that you normally only find on the rear. The solid one,the other front spider you usually see is the skeletal one that looks like a pentagram.
thanks for the info guys 😀 ,that really clears things up.
PS
I have the tech levers and you have to watch what shifters you use with them, problem is ,due to the flip lever which is very thick.Placing shifters is a bloody nightmare.I ended up going from XT to X9 with matchmaker clamps just to get a comfy position.
Just thought i'd make you aware. 😉

dyna-ti,
Are you sure that's a BULB up front? If it runs the small spider, then it might be an XC/mono hub. The whole reason for the larger spider was that there wasn't enough room to get the larger bearings in that the BULB requires to give the 20mm option.

As for the rotors, I was told by Hope at the bike show in London that I could order a Tech brake system with 5 bolt rotors as a standard option. Still, I've been hearing that the Tech brakes didn't do too well in a recent test so I might hold off a bit until I've read how they conducted that.

Onza
Taken on board thanks
what test though?
I'd ignore the bike radar one, they replies only seem interested in the validity of charts and even spelling,so i wouldnt listen to that.
i've found another on pinkbike,[best to get as many to make the informed choice of your own 😕 ]

I only really use my bikes for pottering around, some long speedy downhills but thats about it.
INHO,they cant touch my old C2's 8) ,In fact i want them back
Either that or theyre not fully bedded in 😕

I've got a Bulb front with a splined 5 bolt fitting. Had no trouble getting a 185 rotor made up for my Avids last year and it was 20 quid.

The two spiders were the same at the rotor mountings, it was only the size of the splines that made them different so it shouldn't make a difference to the rotor.
