So im after a new wheelset and looked at the 35ws from Hope as a replacement for my wtb asyim i29s (which to be fair have been great and still true after 12 months of abuse) . The black Friday sales have these around £280 a set now on the orange hubs .. Ive read reviews from great to cheese like ,so im after some STW advise ,do I take a punt on these which to be fair I know are all of 35grams heavier than the i29s or go for the DT Swiss 511s which are closer to £130 more.
massively strong... i found them impossible to get out of true...
They're also proper heavy....
Can't help with the 35Ws, but I just bought a set of Stans Baron S1 wheels for £270 and feedback on the rims seems good.
Winstanleys have them at that price but they take a while to come from importer.
I'd agree that they're strong and heavy. I haven't killed mine yet and they're still round. They are covered in dents though. That large rim area folds over quite easily and I've had to bend the big ones back into shape.
Combined with 2.6 tyres they transformed the feeling of my bike. Much smoother ride and way more grip which felt amazing on uplift days and in the Alps. It feels a bit more sluggish everywhere else.
I know loads of people who willingly slog around the Peak with them including myself so they won't hold you back.
I'm going to ride them to death then see if I can stomach the cost of something with similar dimensions but much less weight like an SC Reserve.
My mate went through his quite quickly. Rear ended up being written off. Replaced with Dt Swiss 511s. Quite a hard rider though, depends what sort of riding you do.
Have had two rear rims bend so far - Won't be buying any more.
I'm on 64kgs and don't do big stuff, they just bend when you hit square edges, running a psi of 27ish in the rear.
Cheers all . .i did forget to add im close to 14 and a half stone all in and most of my riding is Peaks and Lakeland you know there areas covered in ROCKS! I ride a Whyte 160 so up front would see a 2.5 shorty or 2.6 mary and the rear more than likely a 2.4 Dhr or F .I normally run the rear quite firm so around 30psi the front a lot less.
As for heavy some 40 grams on the rim over what im running at the moment I wouldn't have thought that would make such a difference.
I have found that they do suffer from square edge hits. But now I have now added an airliner in the rear, i feel it is indestructible.
Hmmm I was considering a set of these too, but i'm put off by the weight and rim-durability. Shame, as the Hope Pro4 hubs are bombroof.
What alternatives are out there in the same price range 30-35mm internal diameter?
Hunt?
Not sure about weight, but if u break them or have any issues it’ll be dealt with swiftly and comprehensively. The customer services is truly top notch.
The only thing I'm disappointed with on my HB160. Both front and rear got sizeable dings in them. I wouldn't replace them with Hopes again.
Mine have been faultless.
I run 3” Nobby Nics on my Stooge. I’m a [s]well built[/s] fat bloke, 120kg and run 15psi front and 18psi rear.
Like I said, faultless.
Ive read reviews from great to cheese like ,so im after some STW advise
Well looks like you aren't going to get any different here!
Not the wide version but my standard hopes were like cheese. Full of dings. Not run at silly low pressures either.
I had them on the pro2 hubs too and the free hubs weren’t great. Disintegrated twice. Most disappointing Hope purchase ever.
I read that they're like cheese too so I went for the Hope DH rims on pro 4 hubs. A lot heavier than my DT Swiss 1700 but they are near bombproof. Riden the alps and not a ding in sight.
No good to you though as they're 28mm internal
I’d look at the dt Swiss ex511’s on Pro4 or 350/240 hubs I think. If you want to save weight you could do an xm481 on the front and ex511 on the back.
xm481 and ex 511 .@Joebristol that would mess with my OCD no end :0
The ones on my HB160 have been fine so far with a 2.6" DHF front and a 2.4" HR2 rear with a backer rod. The secondhand ones I bought off of Facebook (£35 for a pair inc. spokes) - one was perfect, the other (probably was the rear) was a bit dented but still holds tubeless without a problem. Haven't tried straightening it.
They aren't the lightest, but to me, they seem strong enough and give a decent tyre profile with the right tyres.
