[#7272654]

I ordered a Crankset from Evans last week and got the email today that it had been delivered.

I arrived home to find two identical boxes. My first thought was that I had mistakenly ordered two cranksets. However, although both were addressed to me, the shipping note in one of them is actually for another person.

Assuming I'm going to do the "right" thing, should I email the intended recipient to let him know before I contact Evans?

Alternatively, how much is a brand new Shimano XT 11-speed crank worth? 😆

[s]One of those where it really is down to your own moral compass
Personally I would probably give it to a mate or some such.[/s]

Can you e-mail me directly so i can advise you properly on this dilemma?

Email Evans and get them to reimburse the return postage. Don't contact the intended recipient, just muddles things, let Evans do it. Simple postage mistake.
Seeing as you've now posted it up on here you can't keep it, it the law doesn't get you, Karma will...

Why does a question need to be asked?

You should do the right thing and just keep it.

If you send it back you are creating paperwork for someone, no-one likes extra paperwork do they?

Meanwhile the other dude will have reported that he hasn't received his yet so Evans will send him another as replacement, then 'yours' turns up so now someone else in Evans will not realise they have already sent him a replacement and send him this one also.

Now this other dude has two cranksets, so what does he do? Send one back and create more paperwork? Where does it end?

They will know you have it, only time before karma bites you on the ass, be a good human being and return it.

Yeah,
Send it back.
I got sent two Fox Float Kashima 29 forks once.
Very honest and sent a pair back.
Explaining the situation and getting a positive response had me wishing I had kept them!
Karma and all that!

Why does a question need to be asked?

Because a question left unasked is a wasted opportunity to learn...

Keep them but murder some tramps* and burn down your house with the bodies inside and then disappear, don't look back, just run.

* unless you live lone, then just one will do unless you think it'd be better to have a spare, just in case it doesn't work out with the other corpse.

They made a mistake. Send it back. It's what you would want someone to do to you if you made a mistake which would cost you money, surely?

I probably wouldn't do anything, but more out of laziness than anything else. I have dozens of faffy little jobs that need doing that would take priority over that one. 🙂

I think you have to inform the sender as it was obviously a mistake. But I also think that they have to collect the goods within a certain time frame (not mentioned in the link)

Inform Evans. Karma can be a nice thing, plus you will sleep better.

Happened to me once with CRC with a pair of shoes I bought which were missing laces, called them to let them know and they sent me another pair!. When I called them again they said keep them both.

I had the same from CRC once. I emailed them twice about it but they never replied. I kept the part ( a 1x chain guide so not that expensive ).

They'll ask for It back soon, just keep it safe until they ask for it.

Knowing my luck I'd take it back then they'd write to me asking to it back and have no record of returning it!

I ordered a tshirt from the nice people at stiff a year back, it didn't arrive due to postal problems (not their fault just problems at my local postal centre), they then sent me another t-shirt. Finally the first one arrived and I paid for it as I liked the tshirt, and they sent me a mtbing sticker, which is on my laptop and has led to a number of chats with fellow mountain bikers in cafeshops, including a delightful young lady, I'd call that karma.

I sent Evans an email request for help on a warranty on Friday. They haven't answered it yet.

If they do the right thing and answer me, you should do the right thing and send it back. If not....

I have had similar (not Evans) and mailed supplier advising situation and said I'd be happy to send back to them if they sent me a postage paid jiffy bag. They thanked me and said just keep the item (value around £100)

All this talk of Karma ... I agree... this is karma paying YOU back.

Evans is probably owned by some private equity firm

Keep it

Funnily enough I'm waiting for one of those to be delivered at the moment.

Not from Evans though.

You could send one set back for a refund. That way you would have got them for free. And if you feel guilty just post on here that you returned them

Note - this is just a suggestion, not saying you should.

Someone I might know, bought a shed load of kit of CRC only it never arrived so they waited and reported it missing. Duly another delivery was made. About six weeks later the original package turns up, it had been delivered to the wrong floor and the other company had forgotten to pass it on. No one was harmed in the making of this honest mistake... and another benefit of stealth deliveries to work!

I feel a bit sad that you even need to ask this question. Doesn't matter whether it's a big company or someone from the classifieds section here; it's simply dishonest.

Make them pay for the return though. 🙂

@Surroundedbyhills - that's just petty theft and not something to be proud of.

there is no such thing as karma. Just to clear that up. You may irrationally connect two events to create such as thing but that's all it is.

The moral thing to do is inform Evans of the mistake. If you aren't a moral man then keep it.

Or perhaps more accurately, if you are normally a moral man but when presented with a chance to get something for free you apply arbitrary self-justification such as 'karma', then keep it.

If it were any other outfit than Evans then yes I would return as I wouldn't want a smaller retailer to lose out.

As they themselves have no moral compass what so ever then yeah, I'd sellthem cheap or give them away to a riding buddy.

It's not that I don't like Evans, it's because I hate them with a passion!
(Fyi not for consumer reasons but work)

How about keeping it and seeing how long it is before they ask for it back - just as an experiment of course.

I've just had something similar to the OP from Planet x.

Got home to find my one box delivered with my stuff in (handlebars, brake levers etc) and a whole pile of other stuff including a delivery note which had nothing to do with me - this pile of stuff (clothes, note etc) was inside my box.

I've contacted PX who said they really appreciated me contacting them and could I please send it back (free return). It's off back tomorrow. I did reply and say that if they were that really really really appreciative, my project bike needs a set of black midge bars :). Think that bit fell on stony ground though 🙂
