Tbh you can just turn up and ride on the day, just follow the signs/other riders..But that would be completely irresponsible and against the true nature of paying to ride on public bridleways and roads

Last year we payed to enter then rode our own route with a bit more "cheek" in it. ๐Ÿ˜†

We did take advantage of the feed station though...

A number of riders used to do this but with so many official entries it's a bit like joining a log-jam.

Like ssstu says, a few years back it was entry on the line. What happenened to make the event suddenly take off? Is it the power of the internet, more people riding bikes, word of mouth about events? Not just HONC, but a number of events with say 500 entries 'back in the day' which you could enter on the day now suddenly get filled up in hours even with increased entry capacity of say 1000/1200 places.

Bums.

I was in the bath when I got a text of my bud telling me to get myself entered. Got toweled off and dry a bit too late to get in.

Must have my name down as one of the first on the waiting list...

The first few times I did it i remember having to post a cheque off with an SAE. I suppose this is the price of progress ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Maybe they should run another classics themed event later in the summer?

Should I take the Pugsley???

Well there was a snowstorm the time I did it.

There is the BORC Bucks Off Road Classic, similar though I think a tad harder

To all those planning on riding the event without officially entering;
As I understand it, this event is not a commercial venture like the Merida/CRC Marathons or Kona Mash Up. It is not put on to earn a profit for the sponsors.
It is put on by volunteers to raise money for charity.
If you want to ride the course without entering, it would be nice if you made a voluntary independent donation to one of the charities.
If you make use of the food stops without paying an entry fee, that's theft.

i won't make use of the food stops if i haven't paid, give me some credit ๐Ÿ™„

and as i understand it the "course" you mention is already waymarked bridleways isn't it?

It's cheap to enter and easy to ride. With a great cake-stop.

We'll be riding a varient of the course which misses out lots of the road and adds in some local knowledge cheek ๐Ÿ˜†

Doh, I checked at 8am and then got side-tracked so missed the 10am start and by the time I'd remembered to check again it was full. Enjoyed it the last couple of years so tempted to do it unofficially + donation this time around but I guess if too many started doing that the event would be in trouble due to the numbers permitted (although who sets the 1200 limit, council, police, organising club based on a risk-assessment, insurance provider?) ๐Ÿ™

2006. Horrible - white-out across the tops.

I'm in again this year, no. 447. Can't believe how quickly it filled.

The strange thing is, a 50 or 100km signposted route using lanes and bridleways can sell out 1200 places in less than two hours, yet if it was a challenge to independently plan a route and navigate to 30 locations over 100 square km using the same lanes and bridleways, 50 people would enter and 1000 would say they don't want to do it because it's boring.

I really can't think of anything more dull to do on a bike than a trail quest.

But then I can't navigate for shit.

Yeah, I guess riding off in to the distance hoping you might just stumble across one of the control point markers wouldn't be much of a day out.
