[#6752531]

I can only find Hollow Tech II tools. I have the little preloader you use with your fingers but not the metal pronged tool. The usual suspects only seem to have HTII tools.

Where can I get the bit I need?

Thanks a lot

What do you need, a Park Tool BBT-18?

Last year, I bought a bike with an M950 crank and BB and had to take it to the LBS to have the BB adjusted since I didn't have the tool. 😳

No, the BB is a 'regular' external BB, very similar to this one (and I have the tool).

I need something that works as a crank pusher. I've seen one before but a while ago. It looks a little like an old square taper BB undo-er but threaded (IIRC).

My LBSs only have HTII tools. I need to get the crank off so that I can swap the middle ring for a new N/W ring.

Nope, but thank for the replies. It goes on the outside of the crank.

This tool, I think (although this is the best picture I can find).

It's the XTR M970 tool you need, and yep 30 quid will probably be the cheapest unless you find one secondhand.

Isn't that the XTR M970 removal tool rather than HTI?
I picked one up on the classifieds a bit cheaper than that.
I could loan you mine if you're desperate but you would probably benefit from getting the tool as I've used mine a few times for fettling the BB

Alan's right. Hollowtech refers to a hollow crank design, they were all Octalink/square taper.

Hollowtech 2 is all outboard bearing chainsets. That tool was only needed for the M970 cranks.

No location in your profile, if you're near Cardiff you're welcome to pop into the shop and use mine.

Its not just a case of a square crank puller with an adapter?

Thanks all.

I'm in Phuket (Thailand) so whilst I'd love ot come and see Cardiff.... 😉

I've found an L(ish)BS who says they can do it. My mother in law's coming out here for Easter so if I can get the middle ring swapped by the bike shop, I can wait until she comes out. If the M970 wasn't such a great crankset, I'd be looking at the classifieds for an SLX replacement!

It seems it is an M970 tool, not Hollow Tech, as such.

No "as such" about it, whilst that crank happens to be Hollowtech, that nomenclature was something entirely different, confusingly, and referred to crank design, not to bottom bracket standards. Plenty of HT2 cranks are Hollowtech, but not all. This may be why you're struggling to find a LBS with the right thing. Stop mentioning Hollowtech, and just say you need to remove your M970 cranks!

"Hollowtech 1" doesn't exist.

The only chainsets to use that tool were the XTR M970, and IIRC the very short lived Dura Ace 7800 Carbon.

I wasn't mentioning Hollow Tech to the shops, I was lugging my bike around to show them.

It was the first shop who said, "we don't have HT I tools".

OP, do you know that if you unbolt the granny ring with the chainset still on the bike, that should just about buy you enough clearance to get the middle ring over the spider without removing the chainset.
As you've mentioned that your fitting a N/W ring, you could then either hacksaw off the granny or leave it in place and shift into it manually if you're desparate for a bail-out gear.

Davewalsh: thanks for the hint but it doesn't work with this chainring / spider.

I used that method when changing my Raceface crank to 2x plus bash.

I am keeping the secret granny ring on though 🙂

Aah, fair enough. They're wrong. FWIW it's not even the first generation of HT2, M970 came out in 2007, HT2 was introduced on the previous XTR groupset in 2003. I guess Shimano realised it was a needlessly pointless method of attaching/removing the crank arm!
