[Closed] Holdsworth Elan sizing

I'm on the L to XL border with Holdsworth frames. I look at the top and head tube lengths next (in that order) and compare to a known well-fitting frame

I have a stelvio and am 5'7" just about and I'm on a medium

Has anyone tried some larger tyres in the Elan?

I think the spec sheets says 28mm max, but is that 28mm with nice clearances and mudguards or 28mm just barely getting in and less if you want mudguards ?

ps slightly on topic - this the only frame ever that suggests that I am on an XL frame - strange

To answer both questions -

I'm 5ft 5in and on a 48cm.

28mm will go on a 48 but they are tight and I had to do some serious fettling including quite a substantial bit of filling on the front mech to get everything to fit and still be able to change between front chaining's.

It may be a quirk of a small frame that there isn't a lot of space between the rear wheel and the seat tube but it may be worth looking on the bigger frame sizes?
