I like the look of the Holdsworth stelvio steel tourer on PX but its Planet X, my experience has been mixed, has any one any knowledge of their Holdsworth range?
Is it not just badge engineering? I.e. A fairly generic steel frame with a few old school styling touches?
Quick look on the on one and planet x website and it doesn't look like it even has some nice traditional looking lugs and it's just a straightforward welded frame.
If you want a proper old style one I'd buy an old one in good nick made from 531 or 531ST tubes off cycling UK classifieds or something and put up with compromises.
However the stelvio looks like a nice cheap touring bike donor frame if you don't want a proper old school ride and can live with the ugly rear dropouts.
Edited as I realised I was looking at the wrong bike (the SS Holdsworth on on one not the stelvio).
There's a frame and other bits deal at £250 on the website today. If I was going frame only I'd give that a shot. In fact I'm half tempted myself and to pillage the road bike that I don't gel well with for all the other bits as the basis of a gravel bike.
Thats where iam at Garage-dweller I have a road bike way to big for me for parts and groupset and that frame wheel deal is damn attractive.
I've just had a realisation. It'll be a Shimano freehub and I have Campagnolo! Arse! Unless I can get something else working with a Shimergo setup I'm out.
I reckon worst case if youre on Shimano and it's crap is you can return it or flog the other bits on to reduce the loss. If you can afford to try it and be £100 or so down if it's rubbish it's likely worth a punt depending on how many other bits like mech shims (looks like a band on mech) and cables you might need to buy.
10 speed? Plenty of Campag spaced, Shimano splined cassettes out there. Probably max of 29t but that's huge for gravel if you stick a MTB chain set on. To be honest though they are near enough, especially with a modified cable attachment. See CUK forum and search. 11 speed? Interchangeable.
I looked at those as a possible change from my Kaff. Decided too much of the same really, extra clearance would be nice though.
Usual brand whoring by Planetx. Why they can't let once good but now nearly forgotten brands die in peace is beyond me especially when the tat now carrying 'the brands' name has no revalance to the original company's products.
Surely it can't be that hard for an adult rather than the usual Planetx/Onone primary school naming department (Bishbashbosh for example) to come up with a new side brand/name/sub division?
I would love to know how much extra in sales flogging your stuff under a 'dead brand' brings in?
Mattsccm I'm on 9. Jtek shift mate might do it though. Dam google, possible wallet damage looming.
I have Campagnolo! Arse!
Sounds nasty.
Just remembered I had a copy of a recent BikesEtc where they tested a Holdsworth Competition in a Steel vs Alu vs Carbon sort of test and it came out on top.
Competition was the Condor Italia and Vitus Venon Disc (there is another great name of old shame they are no longer Duralium...)
