Broke my (low clamp) front mech so I need a new one. I've seen a high clamp mech going cheap on ebay - will it be a straightforward swap and just look a bit different / weird or will I have compatibility issues?

Interchangeable I reckon, done it myself in the past with no issues. Only potential probs are the mech band fouling something like bottle cage bolts, or if you've got some sort of bend in the seat tube.

As above, main issue will be fouling on bottle cage mount. Mine won't take one because of this.

Cheers guys. Don't have and never wanted a bottle cage so not an issue for me.

depends on the bike.... pivot location , external frame butting a high band wouldnt fit my wifes mamasita because it would have had to go exactly where the bottle cage bolt boss is ..... you cant clamp over the top of it ....

post a photo.....

It's not so much about if you want a bottle cage or not. If you have a frame with the nut 'cert in the wrong place it will foul the band and mean the mech cant be fitted.

Note the currently cable tied front mech.

Given the choice I'd go for a high clamp mech every time. They last SO much longer than low clamp ones.
In fact Im using an old 8spd XT M738 top clamp front mech that must be over 10 years old. Still works well and very little slop, unlike most low clamp ones. Although my XTR M970 low clamp is lasting pretty well, usually they go loose and rattly pretty quickly.
