After a visit to the docs today, first time for many years, I was quite taken aback to find I have high blood pressure. 163/91.
I don't smoke, drink, eat much salt or have takeaways etc etc, so quite a healthy lifetyle really. I do lots of riding each week with road racing in the summer.
So can't think why it would be high. It wasn't because I had to wait for ages before seeing the doc and was keen to get out on the bike after that did it was it?
yep i have a similarr problem to you.... my cholestral levels were very high.. last week, i was shocked at that ! i dont eat lots of fatty foods (just occasionally chinese food.... dont eat cheese ,have lots of salads and fruit, dont smoke never have done , .... im gobsmacked and i cycle 3 times a week (big rides)... and dog walking... and walks in the dales, cumbria etc ( so that nurse can pish off if she tells me to excersise any more ! now im on a strict diet for 3 months then another test to see if the levels come down....
you cant weigh it up can you ? your brain is ticking over thinking what the pish am i doing wrong for christ sakes... im well stressed now !
Cheers Elaine, it is a bit worrying isn't it! But at least the doc said I could continue to train and race as usual which is good. Going to be retested in a month.
Lots of things cause high BP and not all of them are with in your control. Your BP is a little high but is by no means enough to panic about. The doctor should have taken a couple of readings over a couple of days to get a true figure. I hope he hasn't sent you in to a panic over one elevated reading?
Matt
Thanks Bikey. The doctor told me not to worry about it, but when people who train normally have a lower than average BP it was a bit of a shock to be told mine was that much higher.
Were you nervous about the test? Anxiety will give a false reading? White Coat Hypertension
"Were you nervous about the test? "
I didn't know I was going to have one, just went in for a check on an eye infection. But I was getting a bit impatient in the waiting room as I was running late to get out on the bike to meet my training partners, so that might have had something to do with it?
Elaine Anne - found out a few weeks ago my "bad" chloresterol is off the scale - and my idea of going wild is an occasional smear of butter on my bread! Was told it's genetic but on a really harsh diet to try and drive it down to avoid the dreaded chloresterol-reducing tablets. It was also suggested that I do low-intensity exercise (eg walking) as well as the full-on biking. Apparently, that reduces chloresterol most effectively.
Some people are just pre-disposed, I think.
One high reading in isolation is does not necessarily mean you have high blood pressure.
Go back and get it checked regularly and see.
I had a high reading a while back and its back to normal now, blood pressure can fluctuate.
PP - the reason for your high BP couldn't have had anything to do with improper fantasies involving the blonde bombshell in the training group, could it?
Nah, thought not ๐
I only have proper ones, besides she's a brunet!
Would a coffee increase BP? had one half a hour before being tested.
Ahem, she's NOT brunette! ๐ฎ
What colour was the coffee? Blonde or brunette?
I used to have high bp and it was all down to work-related stress.
Trek Sal, the only blonde I know is a bloke who has dyed his hair blond to match his new team kit. I certainly don't have improper thoughts about him as lovely as he is!
(The coffee was a sludge grey)
Ah, well if you stick to blonde coffee and women you should be ok. Brunette coffee could be too strong. So could brunette women. Grey coffee sounds as grim as grey women - leave both well alone.
Think again about your (everso slightly older) training companions' hair colour.... Oh, another hint, banana and a cuppa tea mid ride should be good for your BP ๐
They picked up high BP on my annual medical a few years ago, they checked all the normal things like diet, stress etc. but in the came to the conclusion that it was due to my family history of high BP (both parents and my younger sisters all suffer from it). One tablet a day(Ramipril 10mg) seems to keep it under control. I can't tell whether its affected my riding or I'm just getting slower due to my age (51).
remember to ride in the afternoon now after 1pm, the body clock works to reduce blood pressure if this is done but riding in the mornings before midday can increase blood pressure not me but so doco on bbc2 last night looking into these things
Uh Oh! Now I'm in trouble!!!
Why Trek 'SAL'? That's as misleading as your hair colour!
(Now I'm in even more trouble!)
No reason, other than the whole name being an anagram. Well, I don't want everyone to know when I'm up to mischief, do I?
See, you never know who's lurking on here ๐
Every time I give blood 20 meters away from work they take my blood pressure and ask me if I've run there! Its a bit of a running joke now but 5 mins later the re-take is fine after a relaxing sit down - anxiety? I certainly dont feel anxious about it.
never had a BP test that i recall.. i'm in my 30's never had any health issues and feel great but keep reading stuff like this and wonder what age you high bp people are or if your doc said you should of got bp checked out earlier or anything like that?
Could it be anything to do with the incredible amount of salt in processed food in this country?
same as some of the above here.
I eat very healthly, exercise a lot, I'm pretty skinny, don't drink huge amounts (my friday night, end of week booze up is 4 tins of lager). I was diagnosed with high BP when I was 21 but refused to believe it. Bupa doctor made it clear it needed sorting 18 years later. Mine was around 150/100 then. No-one knows why I have it. My resting heart rate is low 40's. I have a theory that lots of people with low heart rates have high BP but that's probably complete rubbish. Doctors all thought I was lying about something and so fitted a cuff that stays with you for 24 hours. Horrible thing, constantly pumping away on your arm, kept me awake all night, reeked of cigarette smoke.
Anyway, diagnosis was, no idea why you have it but here's some pills to sort it out which have proved varying in their success. We've tried a few now. Some make me feel absolutely awful, others make no difference. It's down to about 130/90 nowadays, I'm happy with that.
Oh, and many, many people have high blood pressure and never know it. There are no outward signs, you don't get hot or have headaches. It doesn't affect your sleep or your knob or make your face go red. The only way to know for sure is get a test at the doctors.
Could it be anything to do with the incredible amount of salt in processed food in this country?
I *very* rarely eat processed food.
Trek Sal... Stalker?
Well done, stevek.
Damn! Blown my cover.
so how often should you get these things checked ? I had my blood pressure checked last year when I got a general for an op, but don't think I have ever had chloresterol checked ?...
maybe should make an appointemnt......
is it usually Doc or Paractice Nurse ??
And which company is the richest - yep that's right Pfizer - who make Lipitor - statin - to reduce your Cholesterol.
My BP is borderline - my Cholesterol will be high as it's familial but as I said to my wife that's where good old Clotted cream comes from in Devon - IT'S IN THE BLOOD!
