Are high-viz jackets, such as the Altura Night Vision, worth the money?

Or am I better off buying a cheap site vest to go over my current jacket?

You know, I never would have thought so, but I was out on a night ride on Tuesday and one guy had a new pair of the night vision long-johns. They were amazingly bright and visible when light was shined on them directly, but they were black. Great at reflecting another light source.
Don't know how long the reflective material would last under heavy use though?

hi viz side jacket more versatile as you can wear it over all sorts of layers (or lack orf layers) depending on how warm / wet it is.

I liked the look of the altura night vision tights for road biking at night, but they werent that warm for winter use when i tried them on. Very reflective though..

worn over whatever.

I was amazed by how bright mine looked in the dusk, which to me is when hi-vis colour is important rather than reflectivness

I have a royal mail one in orange which is also rather fetching

I was also thinking that the vests don't cover the arms and therefore signaling to turn is not that visible.

Night Vision jackets are very good, but expensive if all you want is the reflectivity and already hav a decent jacket

Or am I better off buying a cheap site vest to go over my current jacket?

Well, I get 'em for free. SO that's what I do. They make nice 'windproof' gilets on coolish days too. 🙂

Don't pay any more than £5 for one though.

Probably a stupid question but any idea how the red version compares to the yellow for visibility?

A Class 2 vest is verstalie ie-you can take it off walking round town / pub whatever but you can also get em with arms in if you want that. You can wash decent ones and they are fine. Washing a cheap one will kill the retroreflective material.

Rather badly in dim twilight conditions. The rod cells in your eyes that give vision in low light are much less sensitive to reds - the Purkinje effect. I have a bright red bivvy bag that stands out like a sore thumb in daylight but blends into the shadows at dusk.

Daytime - hi-viz

Night-time - reflective

I combine the two with a fetching site vest found in the road a few years ago. It even says "Work Safe - Home Safe" on it, which is a nice touch.

Hi-vis cycle jackets tend to be waterproof and so prone to condensation to some extent. Are there any hi-vis softshells?

Civil Engineeer suppliers sell all sorts- fleeces, shirts, goretex, everything all with retroreflective stripes. Could try somewhere like Screwfix.

I've got a Night Vision waterproof and haven't been knocked off since I bought it so it must work.

I wish I hadn't said that now 🙁
