I'm currently running a 1x9 setup with a chain guide up front and a 36t ring. At the rear I'm on a 11-28 HG80 cassette. I'd like to replace the HG80 with another, with slightly more gearing options for climbing - at the minute when I have it at 36-28 gearing, it's a bit hard work on some of the steeper climbs.
My options with the HG80's are 11-32, or 11-34 as replacement cassettes.
Would the 11-32 provide enough extra gearing I need, or would it be better to go with the bigger 11-34?
Depends. If you're really struggling on that 36/28 ratio, go for the 11-34t cassette, but there's only half a gear difference between that and the 11-32t. 28t is the second lowest gear on the 11-32t cassette, so getting that will widen your gear range by an extra 'gear', whereas getting the 11-34t will widen your range by a gear and a half.
