Has anyone got an XT M786 medium cage to work with a 10 speed 11-46t cassette or do I have to surrender to a long cage? Trying to do a parts bin build on the cheap ;o) Experience preferred as Shimano are always a touch conservative with they’re tolerances.
Thanks
Tim
The cage length has no bearing on max low sprocket size, only the max capacity. Both of those mechs are rated for a 36t low sprocket. IME the older Shimano mechs really don't play very nicely with large rear cogs, one of the current 10spd Deore mechs will work so much better.
Not that helpful to you but I’ve got a medium cage M786 with one up rad cage fitted and it works fine.
Run a M786 medium cage mech with 11-40 on one bike and works fine. Dont think it will cope with the 46T without one of the widgets to extend range
As SDB says I would grab one of the cheap M5100 or M5120s that are knocking about and use that.
The bike my lad is using has an older 9 speed medium cage XT mech running 11-42 using a small hanger extender (road link type) no problem. To go bigger might need a longer extender (goat link type).
If you can compromise to 42 tooth and/or use a hanger extension it will probably work.
Thanks all
