[#11215549]

Sorry, think there have a been a couple of posts along these lines lately but can't see anything that covers my point specifically.

I bought a Giant Overdrive headset to ensure I was getting exactly the right parts rather than just bearings. All I actually used were the bearings, with inner brass? ring for the upper, and the top cover with rubber gasket. I left the cups in place.

In the right column are the parts that came off - top cover, rubber gasket, upper bearing with brass inner ring and lower bearing.

In the middle are the upper and lower cups, that I didn't use.

On the left are two additional plates that I couldn't find in what I took off, and I additionally can't fathom where they'd enter the equation as nothing fits neatly into or against them. Adapter rings maybe??

My main concern is that once it's all back together again and tightened up I can see daylight between the rubber gasket and the upper cup, but I can't understand what's different. There's no play to speak of however.

Please let me know if pics aren't working and I'll try again.

Any help / advice much appreciated!!!

It looks to me like the top seal might be upside down.

Thanks hols. Sorry, is that the rubber gasket in my non technical speak? Wasn't aware it could be upside down but I'll take another look.

It looks like your old headset is made by FSA (from the top cover) whereas, from what you say, the new one is made by Giant? Even though they may both be designed for the Overdrive standard it does not mean that the individual parts are interchangeable.

I would check

1. If you reassemble with all of the old parts is there a gap?
2. Are the bearings the same dimensions and angles - i.e. do they sit in the cup the same as the old ones
3. Is the rubber seal up the correct way
4. Try the old brass inner ring - it may be lower profile or fit within the old top cover more

Thanks frogstomp. They are the same part - came in a Giant box and everything, and has Giant round the other side. The old one also has both Giant and FSA logos.

Everything seems snug in all other respects.

I think the seal is angled to provide a smooth taper from the headset to the spacer above it. The way it is in the picture, it's the opposite. My guess is that the top of the seal (bottom in the picture) is basically a flat plate with the rubber seal draping down to fill the gap. It's basically just to keep dust out. I'm pretty sure that if it was turned up the other way, it would fill that gap perfectly.

Excellent fellows, flipping the gaiter seems to have sorted it. Thank you!

Still mystified as to what those other two rings are however.
