I'm new to the forums so be gentle please, I have a vitus Sommet vr 2017 it's non boost front and rear axle with a rockshox monarch rc3 plus debonair imperial sizing shock and the forks are 2016 rockshox yari rc 160mm, now I want to upgrade the forks to the 2017 lyrik rct3 160mm but here is my thing with imperial sizing shocks being phased out and non boost forks being phased out I'm I being stupid buying a fork that is out of date? should I just sell my bike and invest in a new one with metric shock and boost axles? or just stick with the yari and forget about the lyrik

First question. Why do you want to change your fork?

Can’t you upgrade the yari to a lyrik with a change of damper?

i feel the yari's small bump sensitivity isn't good I have messed around with psi and tokens and cant seem to get small bump without dropping the psi that low that it dives through it's travel even if I dab the front brake

and yes Tom you can but I can't find any charger dampers anywhere for my fork only charger 2 and they want 300 quid for it plus fitting cost, my yari are like new and should be able to get 180 quid for them put that to the 300 quid plus fitting and I can buy some lyriks but is it worth doing? on an older bike that's not boost? I'm kind of scared that I spend 600 quid on some lyriks and they end up feeling the same as my yari

Pop a debonair air shift in they are supposed to give much better small bump compliance. Only around £40. I'm going to do my pike when I service it after Xmas.

Sell your Yari and buy a nice used non-boost Lyrik, then add the new air shaft (and consider the 170mm).

Don't worry about Boost/Metric for the sake of it, just wait til you change bikes.

If the small bump sensitivity isn't good and you have to compensate by dropping the PSI so low the fork is diving through its travel then look at fitting a Vorsprung Luftkappe as that was made to address this issue. It works really well.

As above, get yourself the new Debonair air shaft. Don't change it for a Lyrik, the Yari is basically the same fork. The air damper upgrade is worth doing now, and then when the damper becomes available again, if you feel you need it - you can buy one.

Have the 2016 rockshox yari been serviced recently? Even just a lower leg?

Standards change every year, if you do that you will be buying a new bike every 12 months.

Your Yari with a charger 2 upgrade will be a far different fork. Way better small bump sensitivity. I did the upgrade to my 2018 Revelation and it’s now amazing. Ploughs through chatter and small/medium bumps without rattling my hands off any more.
Before I did the charger upgrade, I had a Luftcappe installed. It made a significant difference but not as much as the charger 2.
The Charger upgrade is dead easy to do yourself. No need to pay anyone. Just watch the rockshox video.

I thought I’d replied on this one as well - pretty sure my yari was a 2017 one - which is the same as 2016. I found I couldn’t get the fork to use the last inch of travel, even with no tokens / 30% sag and a huge impact. At that sag I found them a bit soggy too - not poppy and fun.

So I stuck in a charger 2 damper and the 2029 debonair air spring. Massive improvement - I’ve now set them up poppy but still plush. I generally don’t use the last inch of travel, but in a big impact the other day I pretty much used it all - but with no harsh bottom out. So it’s done what I wanted it to do perfectly - now running with 1 bottomless token.

I tried putting mrp ramp control in but I couldn’t get it to feel good with that so sold it on and back to tokens. Maybe even on the most open setting it had too much ramp.

To add - I did the airshaft and damper changes myself, and also out in skf seals at the same time. The sram tech docs are really good and go step by step through both changes. The only tools you need are a circlip plier,
24mm socket, Allen keys and a cassette tool pretty much. A seal driver would be a ‘nice to have’ but not essential.

Charger 2 damper is £200 in loads of places online. You can fit it yourself. Change the airspring for a 2019 one and you've basically got a Lyrik for £240. That's got to be cheaper than selling and buying a new fork.
