[#11220531]

I have a clonk. Well, perhaps two clonks but they're related if so. Imperceptible when cruising along, but pronounced when putting power through the drivetrain, e.g. climbing. Seems to be at the start of the stroke both sides. So far I have:

- serviced the pedals

- replaced the bottom bracket, including cleaning and re-greasing cranks

- replaced the chain

- replaced the middle ring (worn, but it happens in all 3)

- replaced the cassette

- replaced the jockey wheels

- replaced the headset (unlikely candidate but I noticed some play)

What am I missing?

Freehub I guess is the next port of call, though no issues with engagement.

Pivots, du, loose rear hub bearings?

Clunk could be due to torsion under power.
Grab the seat post and top of the back wheelnand reef it back and forth laterally to see if you get noise that way.

That's what I thought when I was getting clonks. Then one rainy day it failed completely. Cleaned and lubed, all OK.

Or snapped rear axle. Had similar clonk on a hope xc.

Poss rear axle as above, but the fact it happens putting pressure on either pedal might mean it's a headset or forks thing.

We've just traced a clunking in eldest_oab's bike to a loose tyre insert! You could feel it through pedals when spinning, hear it when descending.

Sat down and stood up?

I've got a clonk developing that is only there when I'm sat pedalling, dropper post bushes are on their way out.

The side to side twist/shift is enough to make it happen.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions so far. Sorry, should have said it makes no difference standing / sitting.

I'll try cleaning up the freehub next and see where that takes me.

Unlikely to be a "clonking" noise but worth a try.
1. Remove wheels clean and grease the contact points that lock wheels into frame/forks.
2. Seat rails/clamp, undo, clean, grease, put back together.
3. Presta valve lock nut loose?
4. Headset loose, need cleaning/greasing?
5. Seat post clean & greased?
6. Seat pos collar clean & greased?

I feel your pain brother!

Hardtail or full sus?

If you've done the obvious stuff and it's all in good knick I'm afraid I'd be looking at frame welds/joints.

Sounds extreme but once you've eliminated the possible....

It's a full sus (Giant Trance, 2012 vintage).

Thanks again, peeps. Seat post is another candidate I gues due to torsion, though I had it down the list as it's as bad standing as sitting. I forgot to mention that I've done the seat rails, but need to grasp the nettle and give the post a go (carbon post, alloy frame...).

Handy thread this, I have a similar noise on my partners bike, already tried most of the same list but will check the hubs now.

I had one on a almost new, not so new mismatch groupset.

Adjusting distance of mech to cassette sorted it.
