So, I don't sleep well at the best of times but after night riding i feel that I lie awake (but with eyes shut) in some strange sort of limbo of sleeping but awake if you know what I mean - strange I know.
Anyway, I am guessing that my body is wanting something but I am not too sure what.
I eat a hearty lunch, then a light dinner and drink water whilst out riding. I did try energy drink but that didnt make any difference either.
Anyone got any ideas on what might be required?
wait until you feel tired before going to bed ?
I often can't sleep if I ride in the evening.
Always assumed it was just the invigorating effect of a bit of healthy exercise.
ah. You'll be needing three beers.
Maybe adrenaline is keeping you awake?
Was it Mike Tyson who had a 1 minute KO and then had to go for a 6 mile run to wind down? So much built up energy needed to be got rid of.
Have a w4nk, you should be fine!!
I've always had it if I exercise hard past around 9pm. A friend, OTOH, rides the track (Manchester) on a sunday night until 10pm and sleeps like a baby afterwards.
I find a gentle warm down and plenty of water to rehydrate can help.
Yeah I sleep badly after a night ride, I need to stop riding before 7pm or so.
Im the same - was out last night and got home by 11.00 - still awake by 1.00. No idea what to do about it, maybe just ride more till your really knackered and just MTFU in the morning when your feeling dead ?
I don't sleep well at the best of times, I normally only "need" to sleep at about 2am, but if I go for a ride later than 10pm I generally go without sleep that night, or maybe sleep as it's starting to get light around 5ish, then feel awful the next day. I think it's pretty normal, your body is in "go mode".
Yep, same here. Get home, shower, then need an hour on the sofa before I can consider going to bed. Adrenaline, endorphins etc etc all must have stimulating effect, so need to give them chance to metabolise. Glass of milk and a banana helps ๐
If youre having energy drink then it will contain caffine I suspect so dont drink energy drink.
I am very similar, I have a bit of adrenaline in my body still and I find reading helps. Even if its a magazine (not a rag mag ;)) it helps my brain switch off from riding.
Or, try listening to the radio. Not music, something like 5Live or TalkSport or similar, on a lowish volume whilst in bed, it will relax you and again, turn your brain off from riding.
Have a w4nk, you should be fine!!

The solution to all of life's problems!
Seems pretty standard to me. I used to work stupid hours, and I found that if I drove quickly on the way home, the concentration / slight adrenaline would be enough to keep me awake for a while. I suspect it's the same thing if you go out on the bike then expect to be able to sleep soon after.
I'd say defo adrenaline.
I've learnt to love the limbo, just relax into it
Your body will still be getting rest and if you can accept the limbo maybe your mind will be rested too??
Same here. Get home 11ish and bed midnight. Can't sleep, get up, go back an hour so later and usually will drop off. Up at 6 ๐
I can never sleep after a night ride. So nowadays I don't even try for a couple of hours. You wind yourself down You will be requiring
1) Wine - 1 bottle, colour optional (depending on sexuality)
2) Cheese - assorted varieties. The bigger the selection, the better. (remember: there is no such thing as a cheese that is too smelly - there's no-one there to offend)
3) A decent DVD box set to work through - classic comedies are better as they split your drinking/cheese eating time into handy half-hour, bite-sized chunks. (less commitment, required you see) 30 Rock would be my present recommendation
And last, but certainly not least:
4) Porn - In this respect a fast broadband connection or a well-thumbed copy of Razzle will suffice equally. WARNING: DO NOT TRY waking the missus up with the fun-sized mars bar in the back routine. It isn't going to wash at 2 in the morning, I'm afraid
There you go. Sorted! Enjoy! ๐
Your body is still burning calories after you ride and your brain is still active - its just the nature of the beast I am afraid!!
I suffer with this
resorted now to only gentle paced rides mid-week
if I go out with mates, the pace tends to be higher and then a poor nights sleep follows as you describe
Tried various things like re-hydration salts, alcohol, SIS nocte...all with little success
Strange thing is I never used to get this - has started in the last year or so
A cold shower after riding might help. Worked for me after I couldn't sleep after evening training rides.
Your not alone, i suffer after eve training rides too. But i dont sleep that well at any time. Ive even considered learning to meditate!
Thinking about this - the only that I haven't tried and would be worth trying is chocolate milkshake
maybe - just maybe?
I only have trouble sleeping after a night ride when I'm covered in nettle stings and bramble scratches. They have stopped me sleeping for 2-3 nights in the past.
I normally ride 7-9ish and have a couple of shandys before a 30min drive home. Normally asleep within 30secs of head hitting pillow! Much to the wife's disappointment ;o)
