Having real problems with RF evolve cranks that continually loosen over two to three rides. They have been tightening properly to manufactures specs. Any ideas apart from ditching them. These are the second set of cranks from race face. They are on a isis bb ? any constructive advice?

degrease all the threads and use thread lock.

it's possible the splines on the crank/BB are dmamaged as a result of runnign with a loose bolt and it's 'rocking' slightly which will loosen the bolt over tiem too.

Also - try using 2 washers under the bolt - Middlebrun recommend it.

finally - use a proper bolt not self extracting one and do it up *really* tight.

yep, only way to keep my race face ISIS cranks on is to rag them up as tight as possible with a pretty big allen key, completely ignoring the manufacturer specs. They still go on and off, so it doesn't appear to do much damage.

I had this with my Evolve X-Types, but it got progressively worse unfortunately. In the end I had to bin an otherwise perfectly healthy 18 month old pair of cranks.

There is a fundamental design flaw with these cranks that causes the splines to fret and wear prematurely. A friend had this happen to a set of Deus cranks of similar age and there are numerous threads on here reporting similar problems.

My 2 / 3 year old Evolve X-types loosen but its the 10mm bolt that undoes. I now have a replacement crank but the last time I tightened the crank nut I did it so tight I can't undo it now.

I'm hoping that after a few rides it'll do its thing and loosen off.

Going back to Shimano (due to budget).

I think I'll go for Middleburn's next time as they have a lifetime warranty and I've always wanted a set.

if this is the case then Loctite Bearing Fit is your friend

Yep, that's when I first noticed that there was a problem.

Just found this thread - ive had a creaking bottom bracket or so i thought - a recent trip to a hope tech centre with my BB and they said the hope bearings are fine.

He suggested it may be the Race Face evolve XC cranks and the splines being worn. Would this produce a large grinding? There doesnt appear to be any movement though.

I did notice that the bolt wasnt tight when i took the BB out yesterday - also when i used the crank extractor it hardly took any turns to seperate the cranks - basically the inner bit you screw to push cranks apart took very little effort.

they are only just 15months old but well used - i polished the black anodising off after it started to rub off - do you think they would be covered under warranty?
