I'm restoring a kids bike for a mate and one of cups is uber-stuck. It's rusted into place good'n'proper. I got the other side out by g-clamping the splined tool in place and leaning on a 3foot bar connected to said tool. It turned an eighth at a time but it did come out. The remaining cup won't budge.

should I saw it out?

Plus gas? heat? You are turning it the right way?

Good soak with plusgas then can you clamp the BB in a vice/work bench and turn the frame? Probably only enough grip for an external BB cup using this method.

Tool in vice works perfectly, frames make an excellent tool extender. Not sure it would work with an external cup, but the good old internals are fine with this treatment.

eventually got a siezed cup out of my tourer, been in there for 30years, by welding a bloody big nut to it and using a wrench and scaffold bar.

it came out quite easy then.

the fact that it had originally been put in cross threaded meant the BB shell is useless tho ๐Ÿ™

put a bolt thru the splined tool and seized cup, then you can be sure it won't slip out under force. Then tool in the vice and use the frame but make sure you're going the right way. Hope that helps.

A re-tap/chase can be worth a try.

make sure you remember that the drive side has opposed thread. You need to be turning it clockwise to slacken it.

the only way is a REALLY long lever.

shocking how a BB will resist all attackes with heat and cold and chemicals and impacts, but will then spin free as if there was no restriction with the implementation of a 3m scaffold bar ๐Ÿ˜€

Go to Decathlon, Buy good working order but cheap kids bike. Spend spare time created eating chocolate and picking your toe nails (or other such leisure activities).
Like my suggestion?

barca2 - I'm doing the chocolate thing now ๐Ÿ™‚ I have purchased some DP-60 SUPER STRONG Penetrating Spray. The contents of which shall be emptied onto the offending cup. After that I'm round to Olly's to borrow his mighty length! Mine is only 1m ๐Ÿ™

EDIT: barca, I'm at work all week if you're passing through

UPDATE: the overnight soaking didn't help so I popped along to me local bike shop. Tried everything they had but it won't budge. I've just taken it home and tried to saw through it. All I did was graze the surface ๐Ÿ™

PLAN Z: it's dremel time!!!!!! The griding disk is like a semi hot knife through frozen butter but it is getting through. Hopefully with a few carefully ground out channels it will loosen it.

ooooh lots of sparks

UPDATE: Plan Z failed ๐Ÿ™ The oxidation has flattened the threads and the rust has cemeted the shell in place. It comes off in small chunks and I'd liken the job to stripping woodchip wallpaper with a toothpick.

I have been beaten ๐Ÿ™

Owner informed and wasn't that arsed so bike heading for the bin.

As long as its the right recycle bin. Some nasty Italian kids bikes are made of the stuff that failed to become cat food tins.

"Nasty Italian" is that possible.
Some nasty Italian kids bikes, however are made of rusty putty disguised as metal.
