Fitting new brakes - I have an inner gear cable guide wire threaded through but cant't get the brake hose through the grommet. I have tried threading the grommet over the hose, and have wrecked 2 new grommets trying to stuff it it, so reckon the hose has to come through from inside with the grommet in place, but the ange is all wrong. off to order some new grommets but how the h£ll do i get the hose through ?
thanks
1) Leave grommet in place in swing arm
2) remove any of the couplings from the brake hose at the caliper end (obviouly depends on brake manufacturer)
3) thread a solid wire through (straightened wire coat hanger etc) grommet and swing arm
4) push the brake hose onto the end of the wire (this may spread the hose slightly, so you may have to cut a few mm's off to get the coupling to work properly once you've done it)
5) keeping pressure on each side (i.e. pushing wire towards hose, and hose towards wire so they don't come apart), gently start to thread wire then hose through grommet into swing arm.
It is easier to do this from the grommet end than the caliper end, though this depends on brake manufacturer and whether or not you can remove the caliper end coupling. Bear in mind the grommet hole isn't cut straight into the swing arm either (even if it looks it, it isn't), so a little wiggling helps things along.
thanks for that mildred - I was doing from back end, forwards - will check if I can disconnect other end (2011 XT's)
new grommets just ordered form Orange and will give it another go from front to back - have disconnected rear olive and as I need to shorten the hose a wee bit should be fine
