bought some old unloved judys and they compress down with no effort at all but dont rebound back? any obvious ideas before i pull them appart. i belive they dont have an actuall spring inside? yes? so what backs them bounce back?
expanded seals perhaps? Too much oil in the lower chamber? Frozen?
How old are they? The Judy's that came off my Stumpy were definitely coil.
Sounds like someone's taken the spring out.
Or are they even older, in which case they might be elastomer - but if so, they are OLD.
If they are old elastomers they can crumble to dust offering little to no spring.
yep there elastomer i think.dot really see how the elastomer gets compressed.ive unscrwed the top adjuster bit on the top of the leg and taken it out.one side is all there the other has one which is a bit crumbly.can you still get them? i maust add i dont want these to work well, ropey to average would be fine but if they dont bounce back then there not really sus forks?!
Elastomers have gone brittle and collapsed would be my guess
i used to have some aftermarket coil springs for those forks.
Long gone now I'm afraid otherwise you could have had them. Maybe you can find some on fleabay or the classifieds?
so could the elastomers be bodge replaced with a spring of the correct size then? i think there are springs on ebay but i thought they were for later judys?
does any one know if cheap Sh@tty forks on taiwanese £99 bikes have springs in there forks? if so im thinking i could cut them apart and affect an "alternative repair" i.e. BODGE!
I repaired some 96 Judys with a mega fudge. I got some proper springs out of one fork and an Englund cartridge out of another set to make a working pair.
You might try retrobike and ebay for old spares or repairs Judys.
