[#9385966]

I need a comfy ,lightish xc machine.
Was drawn to the Orange 4 as I really don't won't to be chasing creaks in a multi pivot bike and I want something that won't look too dated in 10 years. I'm not a wash after every ride person. However the bike will be mainly fair weather as I'll be on my fatty in the winter.
A shop near me has a test Orange 4 but when I went on their website to book I saw they also sell the Whyte T130s which ticks none of my boxes but looks really nice and has a water bottle mount.
How good are their bearings do they creak, are they easy to swap?
I can't see a lock out on the fork does it have one?
Does it have a screw in bottom bracket?
Anything else I should consider?
I love my Spearfish but would like a bit more travel. Happy to buy a frame and fork and swap my bits over.

Custom hard tail?
I must say I saw a new (then, about a year ago) orange hard tail at a show and it was rather lovely.
Some of the birds look nice too.

Are you wanting a full susser or a hard tail?

Sorry, you say you want a lightish XC machine and are looking at hefty trail bikes? I'm confused 😕

you've never ridden an Orange, then 😆

well in the best traditions of STW and recommend what you've got (and not meeting the OP's stated requirements), I'm finally rekindling my MTB mojo with one of these

(got mine during the £250 trade-in-a-wreck promo they were doing). Spend the rest on some fancier wheels or something.

Does a model from the Kona Hei Hei range fit the bill?

Love my alloy 2016 DL Trail

I was playing with the Bird site the other day and built a mint enduro bike for £2500. I'm sure you could do something similar with the 120, wouldn't be any more hard core than a 4?

Not really through about Whyte bikes before but the bearing warranty makes me a fan.
Any thoughts on this? https://www.winstanleysbikes.co.uk/product/81540/Whyte_T129_S_29er_2016_Bike
Does this model have improved rear tyre room?

Oddly enough I was considering a 2017 carbon of these to replace my Anthem as a 4 x a year marathon bike and weekend bike.

Any good?

Mr Burger rear tyre gap info please.
Could you also measure the width of the swing arm at rim level like the picture.

Not a full suss exactly, but what about a trek procalibre softtail? Their second best version was about £3k so could maybe find a discounted one

Wouldn't usually call a nearly £3k bike a bargain but that Scott looks amazing for that money.

The spark is 'almost' a good bargain, but the wheels have shrunk along with the price 😆
At least it does actually meet the OP's original requirements unlike most other suggestions so far.

Btw, that tallboy I linked to has 20% off this weekend, as do all their bikes and kit.

I'd say it depends on your definition of XC. Scott above looks great or Giant Anthem perhaps? If more trailsy then Orange, Bird or Whytes mentioned above would be on my list. Although the Kona may swing it for me, STW loved the Hei hei

Always really wanted an anthem til I saw a man walking his dog on an old one.
Whatever I buy I don't want it to end up being chained up unloved at the station.
You never see an orange 5 waiting for its owner.
