Is this because the batteries are dying? only had it a wee while using cheap rechargeable batteries

That would be my first guess. It does turn off when the battery gets flat.

Try another set or a set of non-rechargeables

and they recommend 2700mAh batteries.

mine did with Duracells. Then I swapped to these and it was fine.
