[#1019469]

I'm meant to be riding tomorrow and just been out to give the bike a once over.
The BB is not spinning freely at all.
I've skooshed it with loads of GT85 to try and flush the crap out, but it's not made any difference.

When I turn the pedals really slowly it's making a loud cracking noise at 3 different point. This noise resonates thru the frame.

Tried and failed to get the Truvative cranks off it to try and see if I can re-grease etc but they won't budge 🙁

Is it Goosed ?
What are my options ?

what cranks are they?

If they're giga x-pipe firex type ones, they'll just need a bit of careful leverage on the self extracting bolt thingy.

There aren't three really stiff links in the chain are there? Just a left-field suggestion!

They are Fire-X and I've tried to 'gently persuade' the bolts out and they ain't budging.

munk - def not the chain, it's sounding very structural.

Just a thought - I'd be down the LBS myself by now despite having a reasonable idea about most things these days 😉

read the manual for the cranks, I remember that it's a weird self extracting thingy, but maybe you need to turn the bolt the wrong way to release it

edit: read the posts on this topic

"The X-type right side crank has a one-key release system. The retaining cap use a left-hand thread, and is secured to the arm with a 10mm hex wrench. It is not necessary to remove the one-key system. To remove the arm, use a 8mm hex wrench on the crank bolt and turn counter-clockwise. One-key system will remove arm from the spindle. After removing the right arm, pull the left arm to remove. It may be necessary to use a mallet and tap spindle to free the arm."

yer try taking the chain off and spin it then. if its still cracking your in trouble. be careful with the gt85, it will break the grease down in your bb. what crank set is it?

Truvativ Fire-X isis on a Giant Trance.

Update: The non-drive side came out with a forceful turn of th 8mm hex.
The drive side now sports a rounded out and cracked head on the "self extracting" bolt.
To try and save the cranks I tried applying heat by transfer whilst drilling the bolt out. And it still won't budge.

Cant get a set of mole grips on the bolt to try and colapse it in on itself and tear it out. And there is no room to get a hacksaw at the axle, as there is not one. (the crank arm is right up to the shell with this type of system.)

🙁

you wont be able to cut the axle. its way to hard. is it the howitzer bottom bracket? if so you might be able to get it out with the crank arm on? ah i see its isis. humm tricky one. it has to be pulled off, whos your nearest shop?

can you beg/borrow a crank/bearing puller? Proper hardware stores have em

I have something like this, bought for motorbike applications but been deployed to remove a stuck crank before.
