So I thought I'd clean my bike after a ride today, I took my brake pads out of my hayes stroker trails (easy enough), and noticed what I think are my cylinders were eneven, so tried to push the one sticking out most back with a 8mm ring spanner, no joy. So I thought I'd try and pump the brake to move the other one out then try to push them both back, ended up with one cylinder falling out and oil everywhere. Have I completely ruined my brakes or is it a case of getting a bleed kit and starting again?
Help please, I feel like a very silly boy!!! 😳
Its a case of replacing the piston into the caliper and then bleeding them. Make sure the piston goes in completely square - it shouldn't need much force.
thanks tj, will the piston that was sticking out slightly more than the other now push back all the way as well?
And where can I get a bleed kit from soonish, are they order from hayes only?
Crasher - the other piston may be stuck - if so once rebuilt hold the piston that moves easily and pump the lever to get the other one to move. clean it and then Lube it with either the correct brake fluid or with red rubber grease and then push it back in.
Edit - you can often bleed brakes without the specific kit but I don't know about these ones
if it wont go back in, empty the system of all oil, clean it all up esp the piston's, check the seals to make sure you dont need new ones.. then put it all back together, just a tip when you pump the brakes to get the pisons almost out, put a sheet of card in the middle to stop them falling out,
Help please, I feel like a very silly boy!!!
"A Friend" once did the same with his juicy threes. Said "Friend" didn't know about STW at that point and had to fess up all to his LBS when he popped in with his bike and handed them the piston...
[s]I was [/s] my friend was very red that day 🙂
Still they get a good laugh at me when I go in now...
I've just been out to try and push the piston back, and it retracts, then slowly creeps out to the same position, there's no oil in the system and they're only 4 weeks old so I'd hope it isn't a seal!
CTR, thanks for the tip, cardboard for me next time!
DM, its the only way we'll learn after we've messed things up, I'll not do it again! ha ha!
Crasher, Its probably air trapped behing the piston that is pushing it back out. You may need to detatch the hose from the caliper so that as you push the piston back in, the air trapped behind it can escape. That way the piston should go and stay in. Get the stuck piston moving again at this stage too. Then reattach hose, and bleed.
Thanks everybody, I've ordered the bleed kit so when that comes I'll be trying to fix it and probably posting back on here for help! At least if I'll know how to do it for if needs be another time!
