Both road and mountain.

Everything medium is too small.

Everything large looks like a mushroom.

Giro / Kask / Bell / Bontrager all too small in a medium but too big in a large.

The only road helmet in medium I can get on is the Gen 1 Specialized Evade. My mtb helmet is a Gen 1 Bell Super - but the new Super / Super DH is enormous in comparison in Large.

What have people on the borderline gone for?

I'm pretty much exactly that size. Only MTB that felt right was an IXS Trail RS.

I use the same on the road, as I haven't been able to find a nicely fitting road one!

DH helmet is a Bell Transfer 9, fits like a glove.

I have a poc road helmet in medium, fits perfectly. Last year I bought a giro vanquish tt helmet with lots of room in medium, whereas my old medium atoms is right on the limit. So maybe all giros aren't the same. My Louis garneau mtb helmet is medium, claimed 56-59 but loads of room even with a buff underneath.

POC for me, both road and mtn bike helmets, I’m a 60cm and L fits right with room for a cap under when wearing the road helmet. The mtn bike helmet is snug, yet comfortable fit, as the vents are smaller you don’t feel as much of a draught on chilly days.

Agreed. 59-60cm here and I find Troy Lee the same. Have had some success with POC their XL/XXL goes to 62cm but the shell doesn't look like a bucket. Met Parabellum is a similar shape if you can live with the ludicrous visor. More recently a size L Lazer Revolution has raised the bar in terms of fit. The convertible design means the sides and straps are 'inboard' IYKWIM

POC large is a mushroom and enormous again.

Giro I would have gone for the synthe but medium JUST goes on but is uncomfortable and totally no space for a cotton cap.

Tried POC and Smith Optics. Both still made me resemble Toad from Mariokart. Settled on an Urge (Endur-o-Matic 2) in the end. Lowest profile helmet I’ve found so far and very green credentials.

I have this problem too, tried loads before settling on a large Kask Mojito and whatever their MTB helmet is called. But I see you've tried Kask already.

I'm the same, medium POC is too small (shell hits my head), large POC is too big (flops around).

I'm currently riding 7idp helmets in their M/L size, really good fit.

What shapes are people's heads? I'm a 59 but long thin head not round.  Kask K50 was good fit and replacement  Lazer Z1 is ok but not brilliant. I find most are too round in shape.

I struggle with this as well.

Road - The Lazer O2 comes in a size M/L that’s not too big looking and fits ok.

MTB - An old Urge L/XL is a tight squeeze on my bonce but again doesn’t look like a mushroom.

I tried a POC octal race day helmet in a medium and it just fits (prob not enough space for a cap as well) but other POC helmets don’t come close to fitting so they must size some of them differently.

If its road, then the Specialized prevail II is what you want.  I too have a 59cm head.  On the MTB i use a large Kask.  It's a bit mushroomy but works okay for me.

Same as submarined above, I ended up with a IXS Trail RS EVO which is snug, but fine.

Tried 661 and TLD helmets but although they fit, they just felt and looked huge.

+1 for the IXS Trail.  My previous 661 Recon in large was OK, too.

I have similar issues, with M being at the upper limit of adjustment, and L being at the lower limit.  I've resorted to having a M for summer (no headband, hood or balaclava), and a L for winter when its time for a headband etc.

For balance, Poc in the supposed correct size for me doesn’t fit. Decided you can’t just buy and hope it’s ok, expect to return plenty. Shame more physical bike shops don’t stock many (not near me anyway) although I can understand why.

Carnac xc helmet from planet x fits me. Fits 58-62 cm.
