Narrowed it down to the GoPro HD or the X170. Quite a difference in price mainly due to the HD of the GoPro but also it has a waterproof casing rather than just weatherproof.
Any experience of either of these?

Bought my dad one of these for Christmas. So much cheaper than everything else. Have not got round to trying it out but the video on the website looks promising. Need SD card and batteries. Quality will be no where near the same but the money saved can be spent elsewhere. Hope this helps.
Cheers Tootin. Certainly a more appealing price but hard to believe the quality will be good enough to make a DVD. Let me know how you get on
I looked at the X170 but went for the GoPro HD in the end.
I'm very impressed with it. It's easy to use and the picture quality's brilliant.
I still need to find some editing software that can cope with HD though.

Mmm, not thought of that. Can you can "turn off" HD and just have standard definition? I know it kind of defeats the object of getting the HD cam but at least I'm future proof.

I think Sony vegas software is the one to use,I am not sure what format the go pro uses but for full 1080 HD it does require some serious computer processing to edit it due to the big file sizes.
I looked into this admitadly last year, there could be some other sw out by now.

You can either upload direct onto Vimeo or Youtube if you don't want to edit or convert into a different format that you can edit with any run of the mill software.
gavgas.
The GoPro gives you five different settings you can record in. The top one being 1080p full HD.
My PC isn't powerfull enough to do anything with that though.
So I'm recording in 960p HD.
Anywhere I can get the Sony Vegas free?
Mmmm.
Just had a go with the sony vegas.
Quality looks rubbish.

What about a Contour HD? Very pleased with mine.
contourHD here too. not keen on the vented helmet mount mind you. just re-sewn mine.
both using the goggle mount on a full face:
- sorry for the swearing 🙁
have yet to upload all my morzine footage...
DB100.
What you using to edit with?
let me correct myself
have yet to EDIT AND upload all my morzine footage...
hence taking an interest in the other responses 🙂
The Gopro HD is great, but likewise, I'm seeing the full HD as a bit of future proofing rather than anything I can use practically at the moment. I was fairly limited as i got mine mainly for surfing, and the HD is waterproof to 60m!! Quality is good even after converting the file and editing with windows movie maker.
With the Evans 10% off deal it worked out ok, particularly as you get the rechargeable lithium battery included.
Mmmm.

I've been using Vegas (the cheaper one - Movie Studio?) for years, no issues whatsoever with quality though I've not used a HD source. Are you picking the right encoding?
Standard hero pro wide for most of this - edit with movie maker
I like the quality of the original files before compressing on youtube
Also using my HD cam on lowest film rate edit with sony vegas cheap version - amazing quality on this but take an age to render to file

I have a PV camera & recorder - great quality - lots of faffing with wires though.
I like the editing at 1:04 - It is! Great shot.
The age it takes to render is down to your PC spec I'm afraid.
I've got one of those Amazon ones that Tootin pointed out. For £20 they're ace. In other words pretty poor quality, but a simple cheap toy.
