Hi guys
I have a cannondale prophet with an oversized head tube,
At the moment I'm using an 1 1/8" fork but I've just bought a fork with a tapered steerer,
Is it just a case of fitting a 1.5" lower half headset and keeping the 1 1/8" upper I already have fitted ?

Yup, pretty much.
You should check the length of taper in relation to the head tube length, you may need to get an external lower cup to allow the fork to fit properly.
Also you should check the ID of the cannondale head tube I am not sure if they are standard 1.5 diameter or different. This may influence your choice of headset as well.
What size is a standard diameter 1.5" head tube ?
I thought 49.5mm was standard but according the doc below they can vary,
Have a look at this tech doc from hope, you can buy the lower cups individually from merlincycles, hopefully one will suit for you.
